Bungie’s Destiny 2 Season of the Deep update is just-about here and with it comes a brand new trailer showcasing what Guardians are going to be able to dive into when they drop into Destiny 2 next. We know this is considered one of the best free PS5 games and best free Xbox games out there for a reason, but Bungie is pushing the boat out with Season 21. Why? Well, there’s going to be underwater gameplay sections – and an interesting development to the story.

Yes, that’s right – the Destiny 2 Season of the Deep release date is finally here and with it comes a fantastic seasonal update that introduces underwater gameplay alongside this requested Counter-Strike 2 feature for Guardians to enjoy, a whole host of new weapons and armor items, and more story content. If you’re on the hunt specifically for the best Destiny 2 weapons, you’re going to want to keep your eyes peeled. However, those of you just here for the narrative content may want to check out this Destiny 2 Lightfall sale if you don’t have access to the expansion already.

As you can see below, though, there’s a lot to unpack in the trailer alone. The Vanguard and your Guardian are being drawn underground – and underwater – by Deputy Commander Sloane to delve into the depths of the methane sea for answers when it comes to The Witness – answers which may or may not come from an actual leviathan. This is all somewhat-surprisingly going to include some playable underwater gameplay segements. Right now, though, they do look like forced walking sections – something to get you from firefight to firefight. However, these still look like they’re opening up brand new areas of Titan – and that’s not a bad thing at all.

Guardians are going to need to navigate tight Subnautica-style caverns cautiously, chasing the next air bubble to avoid an untimely demise. Then, they’ll pop out into a larger air pocket – or into an underwater construction – to battle against the Fallen (and, we can imagine, other fiends and foes). You won’t need to worry about drowning when you’re in the thick of a fight, but it’s still going to be something worth looking out for.

Interestingly, the trailer also confirms Taken-themed weapons will make an appearance – and there’s also going to be quite a few new Exotics worth checking out. You can take a look at the Taken weapons below:

Season of the Deep is going to try and fix one of Destiny 2’s worst Exotics, which is great, but we don’t know for certain if it’s going to make a massive impact in-game. What we do know is there might be some contention for the best Destiny 2 armor options – just look at what’s coming down below:

This trailer also confirms fishing is coming to Destiny 2, which offers Guardians a little relaxation break between battles. Who knows what you’ll be able to fish up from these waters – hopefully it’ll be something worthwhile.

If you’re ready to dive into the Season of the Deep, you can find the latest on the best Destiny 2 Hunter builds, the best Destiny 2 Warlock builds, and the best Destiny 2 Titan builds right here. There’s a lot of content in this looter shooter, so there’s no shame in needing a refresher on what’s on top at the moment.
