Destiny 2 Nezarec is one of the most mysterious and intriguing characters in the game, having been built up in the lore long before their full arrival in Lightfall. While Nezarec is largely an enigma, we have learned more about them given they are the final boss of the Destiny 2 Root of Nightmares raid in Lightfall. It’s definitely a good time to start brushing up your knowledge of this ancient and malevolent character.

For more ways to brush up on your understanding of the complicated story of Destiny 2 besides Nezarec, we’ve also got deep-dives into key Lightfall details. From Destiny 2 Cloud Striders, Destiny 2 Calus, and Destiny 2 The Witness, to Destiny 2 Neomuna. We’ve also got an answer to the incredibly important question of ‘what is the Veil in Destiny 2?’, since the Lightfall campaign is rather vague.

Destiny 2 Nezarec explained

Nezarec in Destiny 2 is a Disciple of The Witness, though their origin and species is unknown. In Lightfall, they were accidentally revived by the Traveler’s terraforming blast before they began causing trouble in Neomuna.

During the Collapse, Nezarec was responsible for leading the Black Fleet against Earth and the Traveler, until their ship was damaged by the Traveler and crashed into the Moon.

Since this time, little is known about Nezarec’s activities. We know the Fallen (Eliksni) found Nezarec’s remains in the Lunar Pyramid and split them into relic artifacts once they discovered the body contained a strange source of power. These relics were later hidden throughout the solar system until Eramis tried to find and combine them during Season of Plunder.

While Eramis’ plans were thwarted and the relics of Nezarec’s body destroyed, Nezarec has a presence in Neomuna with the Lightfall expansion. Nezarec’s haunting whispers can be heard while walking around the location. Furthermore, if you equip either the Nezarec’s Sin Exotic Warlock helmet or the Nezarec’s Whisper glaive, these unintelligible whispers will be translated, with Nezarec making his presence and power known to the Guardian.

Who is Nezarec in Destiny 2?

Nezarec is one of The Witness’ Disciples, seemingly appointed by Rhulk, the first Disciple of the Witness at some point in the Destiny timeline as suggested by the Nezarec’s Whisper lore page. While it was believed that Nezarec had died once their Pyramid ship crashed into the Moon during the Collapse, they were accidentally revived when the Traveler unleashed a terraforming blast on the Witness’ Pyramid ship.

Nezarec is known for their cruelty and strength, leading the Black Fleet in the first Collapse despite it ultimately failing. However, the ‘Of Hated Nezarec’ text claims that Nezarec would return, and it appears as though that time is now.

What is Nezarec doing in Destiny 2 Lightfall?

In Destiny 2 Lightfall, Nezarec had been recovering from their physical death after being revived and transformed by the Traveler’s terraforming blast. Nezarec’s haunting presence is the focus of the Hypernet Current Strike and during news broadcasts, citizens of Neomuna have been experiencing nightmares. The people of Neomuna experiencing these widespread nightmares all report hearing the same name: Nezarec.

The Root of Nightmares Lightfall raid gave us more information about Nezarec, such as the fact that, despite their physical death at the end of the raid, they will live on in the consciousness of those it torments.

Is Nezarec the Destiny 2 Lightfall Raid boss?

The speculations and predictions ended up being accurate when Nezarec was revealed to be the final boss of the Root of Nightmares raid.

With the increased relevance of Nezarec in the lore and story of Lightfall, featuring in the Hypernet Current Strike and causing widespread nightmares in Neomuna, it was our job to put an end to it.

Given we knew that the Nezarec could induce nightmares and generally has a twisted, haunting presence, it’s fitting that the Root of Nightmares centred on this ancient and powerful enemy of humanity.

Though they have been defeated, we know they can continue even without a physical body as they thrive in haunting and causing pain to others. After all, this is not Nezarec’s first death. While it’s unlikely they will be transformed by the Traveler again and given a physical body, it’s possible that this isn’t the end of Nezarec.
