Populated by towering neon skyscrapers, large open plazas, and the markings of a recently bustling metropolis, Destiny 2 Neomuna is one of Destiny 2’s most interesting and exciting locations yet. Hidden out amongst the stars for hundreds of years, Neomuna has been thriving on Neptune in secrecy until now. In Destiny 2 Lightfall, Neomuna is the stage for a war with The Witness at long last.
Alongside Neomuna, the Destiny 2 Lightfall release date is also set to bring an exciting batch of new Destiny 2 Lightfall Exotic weapons and Destiny 2 Lightfall Exotic armor for players to play around with. Perhaps most importantly, there’s also the Destiny 2 Strand subclass for each class, inviting players closer to the Darkness with newly discovered power.
Destiny 2 Neomuna lore
The Destiny 2 Neomuna lore depicts a human city on Neptune, far more advanced than any human settlement we’ve experienced so far, that has been developing in secret since the Collapse.
What is the story and history of Neomuna?
The story and history of Neomuna begins during the Golden Age of Earth and Humanity, in which the Traveller bestowed its powers to humanity to help it thrive. During this time, our favourite Warmind AI, Rasputin (or Red), alongside the mysterious Ishtar Collective created Soteria, an AI based on Vex technology which you may recognise from the Spire of the Watcher lore. Soteria was originally developed to simulate deep space travel and colonisation of planets away from Earth.
During or just before the Collapse, however, Soteria detected the arrival of The Witness and the Black Fleet in Sol. Despite Soteria’s expertise in deep space simulations, they were unable to create a launch plan for ECHO colony ships that would successfully avoid the Black Fleet. Nevertheless, Soteria went ahead and planted a submind of herself inside a number of the colony ships, against the direct orders of Clovis Bray I, and forced the ECHO colony ships to launch.
While most of the ships were inevitably destroyed, one was able to survive until it was caught in Neptune’s gravitational pull. From here, the surviving colonists and crew created a settlement that would eventually develop into the bustling neon-drenched metropolis of Neomuna, with Soteria’s submind choosing to hide their presence and that of the settlement from all outside communication.
Despite this, Rasputin was aware of the human colony on Neptune and Soteria’s presence, holding records for a location called Nefele Stronghold. During Season of the Seraph, Rasputin tasks the Guardian with recovering this information from the Cosmodrome, before ultimately revealing this hidden settlement in his final act.
Furthermore, Savathûn was also somewhat aware of Neomuna. Having been inhabited by Savathûn for an extended period of time during the seasons surrounding The Witch Queen, Osiris was able to glean this information from her memories, which was later confirmed by Rasputin’s revelations.
This leads us to now, where The Witness and the Black Fleet have arrived in Neomuna seemingly in search of The Veil, a site of immense paracausal energy. Alongside our Cabal allies, we race to Neomuna to either take this power for ourselves or to at least prevent The Witness from gaining its power.
Destiny 2 Neomuna activities
With the launch of every new destination comes a whole host of new activities to discover and experience. The Destiny 2 Neomuna activities are no different in that regard, featuring a new location packed with new Lost Sectors, Patrols, Public Events, and even a new six person activity. If it’s anything like Savathûn’s Throne World, then there’s also going to be plenty of mysteries and secrets waiting to be solved.
What is the Neomuna six person activity?
With Lightfall, Neomuna will feature a new six person activity akin to Escalation Protocol on Mars, separate from any Public Events. While details of this mode have yet to be revealed, it’s no doubt going to be a blast to sling through the streets and plazas of Neonuma using the new Strand grappling hook while taking down tough foes as a team of six Guardians.
Destiny 2 Neomuna locations
Neomuna will have several diverse locations to explore, from the neon-drenched streets with shadows cast by towering skyscrapers and the open plazas, to the diamond sand beach and the Pouka Pond.
Here are all the Destiny 2 Neomuna locations we know so far:
- Pouka Pond
- Thrilladrome
While most destinations in Destiny 2 are dilapidated, often in ruin with only remnants of past life, Neomuna is a bustling city that has only just faced the threat of the Darkness. Its streets are clean, the lights are still on, and there’s even graffiti and murals of the valiant Cloudstriders.
All Destiny 2 Neomuna Lost Sectors
So far we only know of one Destiny 2 Neomuna Lost Sector, the Thrilladrome. The Thrilladrome Lost Sector is one of the most unique we’ve seen in the game so far, resembling an ‘80s arcade, complete with neon lights and arcade machines. This arcade, however, is infested with time-manipulating robots with their sights set on you.
Here are all the Destiny 2 Neomuna Lost Sectors we know of right now:
- Thrilladrome
What is the Neomuna map size?
Neomuna is similar in size to Savathûn’s Throne World and Europa, as revealed by game director Joe Blackburn in a Destiny 2 Lightfall preview event attended by The Loadout. It follows the “three bubble public loop” which players will be familiar with from previous destinations, with three main areas connected by twisting paths.
No doubt there’ll be plenty of verticality in Neomuna as well, thanks to the urban design and the new Strand grappling hook. Likely, this will build on the sense of scale felt in the Throne World destination, which featured many locations branching off on many different levels.
Destiny 2 Neomuna enemies
The Destiny 2 Neomuna enemies are diverse, featuring a variety of Cabal, new Tormentor enemies from The Witness themself, and even Vex.
With the city now under siege by The Witness, one of the main enemy types in Neomuna are Calus’ Shadow Legion. These are his army of Cabal that have been corrupted by the Darkness. Thanks to this, these Cabal have had a makeover to reflect Calus’ transformation into one of The Witness’ Disciples.
Alongside Cabal, The Witness has also deployed Tormentors. Tormentors are powerful and horrifying humanoids controlled by The Witness, marking the first time we’ve faced The Witness’ own forces in combat. They are fearsome and will not relent in their goal of taking you down using their large scythe and Light suppressing capabilities. What’s more, Tormentors can also grab you, appearing to drain the energy out of those in their grasp. This will no doubt be quite the surprise for unaware players as this is the first time an enemy will be able to directly interact with the player character.
Moving away from The Witness’ forces, the Vex also have a significant presence on Neomuna. It’s likely that the Cloudstriders, Neomuna’s specialist defenders, have been combating the Vex long before the arrival of The Witness, though their activity has been becoming more aggressive as of late.
Neomuna difficulty and why enemies are stronger
One of the first things you might notice when you touch ground in this neon city is the Neomuna difficulty and the increased strength of the enemies you’ll face. With Lightfall, Bungie has set about increasing the challenge of many activities, including Vanguard Ops Strikes, Nightfalls, Raids, and Dungeons. The city of Neomuna was designed with this new difficulty scaling in mind, making Neomuna enemies stronger than we’re used to in other destinations.
Game director Joe Blackburn outlined the desire to create “a public based destination that felt a little bit more dangerous”. Bungie has used the difficulty experiments introduced with the Haunted Leviathan to create a destination that will provide more challenge when you’re freely exploring.
Destiny 2 Neomuna characters
Neomuna will have a new cast of characters to get to know through the Lightfall campaign, alongside many returning faces. The two main Neomuna characters we know of are Nimbus and Rohan, two Cloudstriders. Nimbus is the hot-headed rookie, often acting impulsively. Rohan, on the other hand, is Nimbus’ grizzled mentor, a veteran Cloudstrider. Nimbus and Rohan will have prominent roles in the Lightfall story as we learn more about the hidden city of Neomuna and take the fight to The Witness.

- Rohan
- Osiris
- Caiatl
- The Witness
