During our Starfield review playthrough, we’ve spent a lot of time digging through the Starfield skills to pick our favorites, but being able to reset skill points would be perfect for those looking to make changes to the best Starfield builds. After all, why restrict yourself to a single playstyle in such a massive game?
Can you respec in Starfield?
No, unfortunately you can’t respec in Starfield. This means there is no way to reset skill points in-game. However, those on PC can use mods or Console Commands to add and remove points.
Given how expansive Starfield is, it’s a shame players can’t respec their character. This issue is exacerbated even further by how important certain skills are. If you want to go deep into the Starfield outposts system, then you’ll need all the skills to succeed – though knowing the best Starfield outpost locations certainly helps. Likewise, the Starfield ships system also requires significant investment if you don’t want to get grinded into space dust, especially since some of the best Starfield ships need a high Piloting skill.
This makes choosing the best Starfield skills more important than you might think, as there’s no way to undo any spent skill points. If you want to change the direction of your character’s build, you’ll simply need to level up more to get additional skill points, rather than resetting the ones you’ve already spent.
With the Starfield level cap being as high as it is, at least there’s enough headroom to eventually unlock everything. However, this will take a significant amount of time, especially if you’re not using the best Starfield XP farm method to level up your character quicker. For a more natural method of progression though, we recommend completing plenty of main and side Starfield missions and also heading into the unique Starfield New Game Plus mode. This will give you plenty of interesting avenues to explore, level up, and earn more skill points since you can’t respec.
How to respec using Starfield Console Commands
For PC players, you can give yourself skill points using the following Starfield Console Commands:
- Add a perk – player.addperk <ID>
- Remove a perk – player.removeperk <ID>
Then, just enter the ID of the perk you’d like to add, such as 002CFCAC for Piloting or 002C5559 for Targeting Control systems.
Adding a perk will add one rank to your chosen skill. This can either be used to unlock new skills or to level up ones you’ve already purchased. On the other hand, removing a perk will do just that – reset that desired skill.
Using these two commands, PC players can effectively respec their character. While some may consider this cheating, the option is there for players who want to use it. Unfortunately, though, this isn’t open to console players; you’ll have to use our advice above instead.
