Star Wars Jedi Survivor channels RDR2 with new beast taming feature

Star Wars Jedi Survivor sees Cal Kestis tame beasts in the style of Red Dead Redemption 2, as he'll be able to do that and more in the brand new Star Wars game.

Embarking on the path of a Jedi Knight won’t be easy in Star Wars Jedi Survivor, but what if you had a lovely animal companion to ease the journey? The new Star Wars game from developer Respawn Entertainment is set to introduce beast taming and more for Cal Kestis, as new mechanics improve on Fallen Order’s foundations. But what kind of beasties can Cal Kestis interact with around the galaxy?

There’s still plenty of time before the Star Wars Jedi Survivor release date approaches, but in the meantime, a new hands-on preview from IGN details the game’s new beast taming mechanic. “Cal eventually also gains the ability to tame beasts, so he can use them as mounts or as ways to traverse large gaps,” explains IGN’s Mitchell Saltzman.

We previously learned that rideable mounts would feature in the game, providing Cal with an easier alternative to get around Jedi Survivor’s large environments. However, IGN’s preview doesn’t elaborate on what beasts are waiting to strike up a friendship.

With mounts traversing the land and air, it is possible that Cal will need to channel his inner cowboy as the feature shares similarities with Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar Games’ western opus required players to tame and nurture horses, in turn improving the bond with the horse in question. Star Wars Jedi Survivor will see an array of skill trees for Cal’s Lightsaber stances and Force skills, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see beast taming upgrades appear either.

Cal’s relationship with nature is an element that took a backseat in Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. Despite defeating endless insects and creatures, Cal only briefly sparked positive interactions with beasts like the Shyyyo Bird on Kashyyyk. It’d be a treat for Star Wars fans to befriend creatures like the S’kytri or the hostile Nevarro reptavians – though these are mostly extinct in Star Wars lore.

There’s also a lot to piece together this time around for Cal Kestis, both narratively and practically. Players can expect to see Star Wars Jedi Survivor’s violence to get a long-requested feature, but it really is the game’s story that could serve up some real treats. Hot off the heels of the popular Disney+ show, it is possible that an Obi-Wan Kenobi crossover is written in the stars – but you’ll need to read this book to piece it together.

Whether Star Wars Jedi Survivor fixes Fallen Order’s frustrating ending is another matter entirely. Before your galactic voyage begins, keep your eyes on all the upcoming PS5 games for 2023 and beyond. With moments like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 release date on the horizon, you won’t want to miss it.
