Insomniac Games’ PS5 exclusive Spider-Man 2 is a popular game, that much is clear. However, the sheer scale of this popularity, despite being available on one platform, is staggering. Recently-released US year-to-date sales charts show that Spider-Man 2 is already overtaking popular multi-platform titles like Diablo 4 and Star Wars Jedi Survivor when it comes to dollar sales – something that sets it on a course to dominate the charts by the New Year.
When it comes to new PS5 games worth playing, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 tops that list – without a doubt. In fact, it’s easily one of the best PS5 games of all time and – as our Spider-Man 2 review explains – unchallenged when it comes to PS5 exclusives specifically. To say Spider-Man 2 is a great game would be an understatement and, after both Spider-Man and Spider-Man Miles Morales proved popular, it seemed certain to sell well enough – even though you can only play it on PS5.
However, now we have a better sense of how well the game is selling so far and it really is impressive. Following jaw-dropping Spider-Man 2 day one sales (where it shipped over 2.5 million units within 24 hours of launch) and some soaring Spider-Man 2 PS5 sales taking it to more than five million units in just ten days, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella is now revealing that – when it comes to pure dollar sales in the US for the entirety of 2023 – Spider-Man 2 is the fourth best-selling game so far. And, that doesn’t even take into consideration the first half of November.
As you can see, in just over a week after its launch (using stats from January 1 to October 28, which is just eight days after Spider-Man 2 dropped), Spider-Man 2 became the fourth best-selling game of 2023 in the United States of America – taking into account both digital and physical sales. This means it is overtaking one of the best RPG games of the year in Diablo 4, one of the best fighting games of all time in Mortal Kombat 1, and even the hit sequel to Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order in Star Wars Jedi Survivor. All of these games are available on Xbox and PC, too.
Of course, in isolation, this is impressive enough, but with Black Friday right around the corner and some of the best Black Friday PlayStation deals yet to be announced, we could see Spider-Man 2 climb even further. With the holidays not long after either, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Spider-Man 2 on top when 2023 draws to a close. If the rumors are true and Spider-Man 2 DLC is adding Daredevil to Insomniac Games’ New York City, the sky really is the limit.
But, only time will tell what DLC Spider-Man 2 players can look forward to. If you are reaching the end of a playthrough, though, you can check out what is being teased with the Spider-Man 2 post-credits scene here and whether you have Spider-Man 2 New Game Plus to look forward to right here. Anyone thinking about picking this game up, though, should definitely do that – and think about investing in one of the best PS5 SSDs. It’s not a small game, but it’s worth every GB of storage space.
