Spider-Man 2’s soaring sales will soon overthrow Miles Morales

Spider-Man 2's sales are on track to eclipse Spider-Man Miles Morales as a Sony earnings call confirms a PS5 milestone for Insomniac.

With the success and quality of Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man games, it is hard to believe this all started 5 years ago. But here we are with the rip-roaring acclaim of Spider-Man 2, which isn’t just a slam dunk for Marvel, but an absolute smash hit with PS5 owners financially. In a new Sony earnings call, the tech giant reveals the extent of Spidey’s selling power.

In this day and age, we know that the appeal of Marvel is enormous, despite mixed results recently within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, you can always rely on our favorite web-head, as Spider-Man 2 is already on track to overtake Spider-Man Miles Morales’ 6.5 million plus sales just weeks after release. The latest Sony earnings call reveals that “the PS5-exclusive title Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which was released on October 20, sold through more than 5 million units worldwide as of October 30, and it has become a big hit.”

Following a staggering 2.5 million players on just day one of release, should the game’s sales continue at this pace, dethrone Miles Morales and likely go past the first game’s total copies sold. As of August 2019, Insomniac Games’ first Spider-Man entry, which is one of the best open world games around, has sold over 13 million copies. At the time, Marvel says that this places Marvel’s Spider-Man as the best-selling superhero game of all time. Not a bad feat if you ask us.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella collates information about 2019’s best-selling superhero games at the time, offering a huge “congratulations to Marvel’s Spider-Man, the best-selling superhero video same of all-time in the U.S.” Until the franchise’s arrival, DC Comics enjoyed several successes with the Batman Arkham series, with Arkham City still managing to usurp 2015’s Arkham Knight despite launching years before it.

While Arkham Knight adds features like the Batmobile and a gorgeous rendition of Gotham City to explore, the story just doesn’t meet the highs that Arkham City often reaches. We wonder if the Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League release date will yield similar thrills, but that remains unclear following the game’s unexpected delay.

Additionally, Insomniac Games reveals in a PlayStation blog post in June last year that “the Marvel’s Spider-Man series now has sold through more than 33 million copies globally, as of May 15, 2022.” Spider-Man 2’s already sterling reputation as one of the best PS5 games available positions the game to climb to the top.

The game also has excellent chances of shifting more copies amid many other new PS5 games, as the holiday season approaches, especially with the Black Friday deals including the game in this awesome Spider-Man 2 PS5 bundle.
