Do you want to start playing FC 24 like a pro? Well, you might just have to change your formation. EA Sports is cracking down on defensive-heavy formations for upcoming tournaments, banning them from use. These new FC 24 pro tournament formation bans stretch to nine set-ups, all three-at-the-back and five-at-the-back options in the game at the moment.

Shortly after the FC 24 TOTW 2 squad reveal and ahead of the FC 24 RTTK players joining Ultimate Team packs, pro players are reporting that EA Sports is banning nine formations from upcoming tournaments in an effort to keep the competition balanced and fair for participants. With this being one of the best soccer games out there, this feels like the right decision. These bans include, as per Swedish pro player Olle Arbin, the following set-ups:

  • 5-2-2-1
  • 5-2-3
  • 5-4-1
  • 5-1-2-2
  • 3-5-2
  • 3-4-1-2
  • 3-1-4-2
  • 3-4-3

Arbin, who praises this decision as the “biggest dub (win) in a long time”, isn’t alone in his support of the decision to ban these formations – some of which are considered among the best FC 24 formations to use.

Liga Portugal pro player ‘JPerez99‘, ePremier League 2023 champion Tom Stokes, and Sounders FC pro player George Adamou have all shown their support online. Interestingly, major content creators are keeping quiet when it comes to sharing opinions on the decision. We know this isn’t going to affect them as much, but when you consider there’s upwards of $300,000 to win in these tournaments, it’s quite an important ruling from EA Sports.

Although, these defensive formations have been lamented by pro players for years – who see them as a negative way to play. So, while you may want to use them in Division Rivals (and when the FC 24 Weekend League start date rolls around), you’re going to want to avoid them if you’re trying to go pro.
