We know you might be fearing the worst for Marvel’s favorite webhead ahead of the Spider-Man 2 release date, but it’s not all bad news for those of you out there who enjoy Marvel Comics and its wonderful array of superheroes and stories. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. In collaboration with Marvel Games, EA studio Cliffhanger Games has confirmed that its first project is going to be a game all about Marvel’s Black Panther – and, if done right, it could be one of the best games of all time.
On July 10, just a few days before this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) convention, EA had unveiled Cliffhanger Games and revealed that the first game the studio is going to work on is a third-person, single-player triple-A game based on Marvel’s Black Panther. Formed by ex-Monolith Productions (Shadow of Mordor, Shadow of War) vice president Kevin Stephens in 2021, this is expected to be the first project for the studio – and what a project it is.
As explained in this EA blog post on the announcement, Cliffhanger Games’ goal “is to build an expansive and reactive world that empowers players to experience what it is like to take on the mantle of Wakanda’s protector, the Black Panther”.
Offering a brief comment on what fans can expect to see, Stephens says that Cliffhanger Games’ is “dedicated to delivering a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience” to players, one that gives them “more agency and more control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven videogame” before.
What does this mean? Well, it’s hard to say but this is already becoming one of the most interesting upcoming Xbox games and upcoming PS5 games out there – and we don’t even know much about it.
“Wakanda is a rich superhero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do”, Stephens adds. “We want our game to enable players to feel what it’s like to be worthy of the Black Panther mantle in unqiue, story-driven ways, and we want Cliffhanger Games to empower everyone on our team as we collaborate to bring this amazing world to life”.
EA and Stephens haven’t shared much more than that, but we know that the Black Panther game release date is a little while away yet. However, in a few years, we could have a truly wonderful selection of superhero games to get stuck into – and that’s very exciting. It’s just a shame Marvel’s Avengers died off. As you can see below, the War For Wakanda did an excellent job of bringing the Black Panther to life in a triple-A game. For all its faults, this story content and the character itself were executed well. So, we have high hopes for Cliffhangar Games’ upcoming project.
