Gibraltar and Newcastle are Catalyst’s kryptonite in Apex Legends

Struggling against Apex Legends' Catalyst? Well, shield legends like Gibraltar and Newcastle look like fantastic counters for the battle royale's techno witch

Apex Legends Catalyst counters Newcastle Gibraltar: an image of Newcastle with a Peacekeeper shotgun

We know Apex Legends’ lack of legend changes for Season 15 is “frustrating”, especially when you consider one cracked Apex Legends player racked up 874 Catalyst kills in the first day, but you’ll be pleased to know that players are already finding ways to counter Catalyst – namely, her Dark Veil ultimate ability – and some are quite a bit more creative than others.

If you’re not sure what this Catalyst ability does, allow us to explain. Dark Veil allows Catalyst players to summon a huge wall of ferrofluid that slows and blinds enemies who try to pass through it. Oh, and as something that blocks scans, it proves that Apex Legends’ Catalyst is Seer’s worst nightmare.

However, while Apex Legends wants Catalyst to appeal to every playstyle – and her Dark Veil ultimate is quite a major part of why she’s great in both offensive and defensive situations – you’ll be pleased to know that there are actually quite a few ways to counter her and her giant wall of ferrofluid. You just need good timing.

As experimented by Reddit user ‘OhItsBryanTo‘ online, which you can see for yourself below, it looks like shield legends like Gibraltar and Newcastle are fantastic counters to Catalyst’s Dark Veil – offering a way for players to make a gap in the oppressive wall of ferrofluid.

Interestingly enough, it seems as though you are also able to move Newcastle’s Mobile Shield with Catalyst’s Dark Veil ferrofluid still on top of it. There’s no evidence to suggest that something like Rampart’s Amped Cover or Wattson’s Interception Pylon will also block Catalyst’s ultimate ability, but it could very-well be the case when you consider the fact that Dark Veil itself doesn’t actually do any damage – it’s more about disorientation, visually blocking, and inhibiting scans.

Catalyst’s wall will sit on top of an enemy’s Gibby dome and Newcastle shield. Can also move the shield with the wall on top from apexlegends

But, we don’t know for sure – so, don’t rely on these things. We can imagine people will test them out in the Firing Range, though, and you can too – if you have a friend. Respawn Entertainment has unlocked every legend in the Firing Range to give players a chance to explore locked legends before they buy them.

What we do know, though, is that everyone’s least-popular legend Crypto can also be used to counter Catalyst’s Dark Veil ultimate ability. However, you’re going to need quite a bit of luck – and some serious finesse when it comes to placement and timing. Much like Gibraltar’s Dome Shield or Newcastle’s Mobile Shield, it looks like Dark Veil actually sits on top of Crypto’s Surveillance Drone. You can check out this hilarious footage from Apex Legends coach ‘Meteor_Sven‘ here, if you want to see something hilariously broken.

We know climbing the Apex Legends ranks can be scary, especially when it’s on a new map like Broken Moon and you have to deal with Apex Legends’ most “VFX intensive” character yet in Catalyst, but there are ways to counter her and it’s worth keeping that in mind. With these discoveries, we think our Apex Legends tier list could do with another change.
