When the first iteration of the PS5 launched in 2020, many players wanted to do away with the standard white PS5 plates. Now, with the advent of the PS5 Slim model, you’ll probably want to repeat that process. The good news is that you won’t have to wait as long this time around, as Sony promises an array of PS5 Slim plates will be available soon after launch.
Compared to the heft of the current PS5 design, the new PS5 Slim model really is quite impressive. Boasting a 30% reduction in size, the PS5 Slim will be able to be outfitted with different aesthetics, according to Sony. “A variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024[…] prices for the PS5 Console Covers will start at 54.99 USD | 54.99 EURO | 44.99 GBP | 7,480 JPY.
Additional colors will be released in the future,” says Sony in a recent PlayStation blog post. If you’re hoping to play some of the best PS5 games with some style, we already know which colors will be coming to retailers. Here are exactly what colors will be available in “early 2024”, from the confirmed list of initial PS5 Slim plates:
- All-matte Black
- Volcanic Red
- Cobalt Blue
- Sterling Silver
- White (included with console)
Colors such as Volcanic Red, Cobalt Red, and Sterling Silver are part of the Deep Earth Collection, which recently launched in September. Speaking on the design process for these new colors, PlayStation design team member Satoshi Aoyagi expresses that “while crafting this new collection of DualSense controller and PS5 console cover colors, we drew inspiration from the beautiful and powerful hues found in the depths of planet Earth. We elevated the colors by adding a metallic finish for a touch of sophistication.”
When it comes to new PS5 games, we are curious whether the PS5 Slim model will receive collaborative plates. Specifically, with the Spider-Man 2 release date just weeks away, many players have their eyes on getting their Spider-Man PS5 pre-orders locked in. Accompanied by Spider-Man 2 DualSense controller pre-orders too, will Sony bring PS5 Slim owners a version of those plates?
It seems like a missed opportunity, but other collaborations are likely in the works. Speculatively, we estimate that the PS5 Slim plates will arrive by February 2024.
Either way, one thing that will remain easy to customize is your storage. Though the new model comes with a mighty 1TB SSD, PS5 games aren’t exactly small. Here are the best PS5 SSD options available right now, alongside the best PS5 controllers to use regardless of what model you own.
