Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 is going to be packed to the brim with references and easter eggs for Marvel Comics fans to uncover – just like Spider-Man and Spider-Man Miles Morales. However, that doesn’t mean you’re going to see absolutely everything you want to see when you’re swinging through New York City. In fact, the recent Spider-Man 2 trophy list leaks seem to debunk a rather huge fan theory; but, it’s not all doom and gloom for symbiote enjoyers.
Spider-Man 2 is easily one of the most exciting upcoming PS5 games right now and Insomniac Games’ new and returning Spider-Man 2 characters are about to go on one hell of an adventure with Spider-Man 2 villains like Kraven and Venom now in the mix. However, while we can’t wait to do absolutely nothing in Spider-Man 2, some fans feel like there’s hard evidence that the infamous Knull – an eldritch god of darkness and the creator of the symbiotes – is going to pop up at some point.
As you can see for yourself below, in this exploration into the theory from content creator ‘Blitzwinger‘, the Venom symbiote we see in Spider-Man 2 might not be the only symbiote we see. Spider-Man 2 cast member Nadji Jeter does say that symbiotes are going to be “everywhere” in this sequel – which would suggest that Venom isn’t alone.
But, where does Knull actually come into all this? Well, following the revelation that the symbiote we see comes from a crashed comet (which is shown in official trailers), parts of the comet found during hands-on previews of Spider-Man 2 are allegedly adorned with a red spiral. This red spiral is used to identify Knull-controlled symbiotes during his attempted invasion of Earth in the comics. So, rather haphazardly putting two and two together, quite a few fans feel like this suggests he’s going to be the ‘big bad’ in the game.
Spider-Man 2 content creator ‘Caboose‘ also explores this theory, but does express that this could be indicative of the future – not necessarily what we’ll see in Spider-Man 2.
How does the Spider-Man 2 trophy list somewhat debunk these theories, though? Well, by simply not mentioning Knull or anything that would suggest such an important appearance.
Shared online by PowerPyx, the trophy list does use language like “a symbiote” to suggest that more than one symbiote will be present. However, there’s nothing to say that these will be linked to Knull and it seems much more likely that they’re extensions of the Venom symbiote we know is going to show up.
However, it does also mention Symbiote Nests as an objective – probably an open-world experience similar to Fisk Hideouts in the first Spider-Man game. So, this reinforces theories that we’re going to see quite a few symbiotes outside of Venom and Peter Parker’s ‘black suit’. Whether they’re going to be directly controlled by Knull or not, though, is unclear; we think it’s much more likely that this is an easter egg, a reference, to the character – not a direct teaser. It seems much more likely that a villain like Knull, if they were to appear, would be in a third Spider-Man game.
