If you’re looking forward to Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 on PS5, you’ll be pleased to know that we now know a little bit about what to expect – and it’s very good news for fans of the webslingers and Marvel Comics. The Spider-Man 2 reviews are in and it’s looking like the highest-rated PS5 exclusive of the year.
At long last, Spider-Man 2 is swinging onto PS5 consoles and we’re all sitting here waiting to find out whether this is one of the new PS5 games on the way worth getting. Of course, if you’re a fan of Insomniac Games’ other Spider-Man games, you’re probably going into this thinking that it’s going to be one of the best PS5 games of the year – maybe even one of the best games on consoles, period. But, what do the experts who have all had a couple of weeks to swing around New York City as Peter and Miles think about it?
Well, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s being talked about as one of the best we’ve ever seen – in every way. As you can read in our Spider-Man 2 review, this is something of a magnum opus for the PS5 – “hands-down the best game of the PS5 era so far”.
VGC also praises Spider-Man 2 as “undoubtedly one of the best superhero games ever” and Game Informer says “Spider-Man 2 delivers a wholesome and optimistic adventure rooted in joy” – despite the onslaught of Spider-Man 2 villains. GGRecon also labels this a “triumphant continuation of an already spectacular series” – which is far from a bad thing.
As you can see on the Spider-Man 2 metacritic page, it’s currently sitting at 91 – which makes it the highest-rated PS5 exclusive of the year and the third-best of all time. When you take other games available on PS5 into account from 2023, whether they’re exclusive or not, it’s currently sitting in sixth place. When you think about how Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best RPG games of all time, and the Resident Evil 4 Remake is one of the best horror games of all time, it’s in good company.
There are a few reviews a little lower than perfect scores out there, with PushSquare giving it an 8 out of 10 alongside IGN, which says it’s “comfy and familiar with just enough new tweaks and abilities” to elevate it from previous entries. They’re not the highest scores out there, but they’re far from bad ones.
If you want to know more ahead of the Spider-Man 2 release date, you might be interested to learn that several Spider-Man 2 suits collaborating with Rina Sawayama and Lando Norris are coming in post-launch content updates. Insomniac Games also wasn’t sure Lizard was “slimy enough” in Spider-Man 2 – something we can all judge for ourselves soon.
We know PS5 players should already be preparing for their Spider-Man 2 downloads, really, but you should really consider picking up one of the best PS5 SSD options when you can. This isn’t the only exciting new release on the way, and you’re probably going to need the expanded storage space to handle it all.
