New LEGO Fortnite update is wheely good (and long overdue)

Rejoice LEGO Fortnite players, Epic Games is giving Xbox and PS5 players the ability to use wheels in its massive sandbox spin-off game.

LEGO Fortnite is a very cozy game, and we love kicking back in our custom-made base, emoting over the blocky campfire. But what Epic Games’ awesome spin-off mode is missing is decent transportation to get across the map, and making unreliable flying platforms just doesn’t cut it. That’s why we’re looking forward to the new LEGO Fortnite update, as we’ll finally get to implement properly functioning wheels in our creations.

Despite having plenty of polish upon launch, Epic Games somehow failed to add basic LEGO pieces like wheels for vehicles to its superb RPG game twist on the Fortnite universe. The studio has been promising to add vital upgrades for sandbox enjoyers since December last year, and now we know that Thursday, March 28, 2024, is when this small but important addition will be implemented. Epic shares word of this exciting update on social media, simply captioning an image of the LEGO add-on “vroom, vroom.” These wheels have an axel equipped, meaning we can finally turn and steer towards where we want to go. We know you’re just as pumped about it as we are.

However, what has us concerned is whether they’ll actually be part of the free update or not. Like its battle royale game cousin, Xbox and PS5 players can purchase bundles with slick cosmetics and, more recently, LEGO templates to make building easier. These specific bundles can cost upwards of 2,400 V-Bucks ($19.99/£17.99), which isn’t exactly cheap just to have the benefit of whacking a pre-made house or burger joint down on the map. Surely Epic Games won’t charge players for something as fundamental as wheels?

At present, players have had to make do with the current iteration of wheels, which are pretty useless as they can’t turn and aren’t compatible in your creations without a lot of trial and error. Normally, experimenting and making silly things in LEGO Fortnite is a blast, as letting your imagination run wild ranks it among the best games around if you love sandbox titles.

However, whatever you make will be pretty useless, no matter which wheels you end up using, as there isn’t a steering wheel to use yet.

Until Epic Games fixes that problem too, we’ve been putting our energy into Fortnite Festival, and the Rock Band and Guitar Hero successor has got some serious updates coming. Not only can you get your hands on a Fortnite Festival guitar controller, but there are new modes in the works too. And if you ask us, there’s only one band that needs to take to the stage next.
