Star Wars Outlaws’ age rating reveals it's going to be more like GTA Star Wars than you think, and we’re just as surprised as you.

When we think of Star Wars games, like you, our minds don’t bring up any massively gory or ludicrous adventures. Just about anyone, from children to adults, loves exploring the galaxy, far, far away. But that might not be possible when Star Wars Outlaws arrives, as a recent age rating classification in Korea indicates it’ll be the closest thing you’ll get to a GTA Star Wars game.

When we think of Star Wars games, like you, our minds don’t bring up any massively gory or ludicrous adventures. Just about anyone, from children to adults, loves exploring the galaxy, far, far away. But that might not be possible when Star Wars Outlaws arrives, as a recent age rating classification in Korea indicates it’ll be the closest thing to a GTA Star Wars game.

The initial Star Wars Outlaws age rating classes the game in the 19+ bracket, which is the highest available rating within the Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee’s classification. Typically, games in this category exhibit high levels of violence, hard profanity, depictions of nudity, and or iterations of on-screen gambling. It looks like the new PS5 game and new Xbox game will be leaning on the latter, as the board’s decision clarifies the forthcoming open world game features “a mini-game with content of in-game betting and dividends.”

It won’t be a surprise to Star Wars fans that gambling is featured, as planets like Canto Bight are essentially the equivalent of Las Vegas in-universe. There’s also the prominence of the card game Sabacc, which was a crucial aspect in Han Solo’s acquisition of the Millennium Falcon. Furthermore, Star Wars Outlaws’ depiction of gambling is described as a “realistic simulation of speculative behavior,” landing it as a title not suitable “for use by minors.”

Ubisoft’s RPG game take on Star Wars also ticks all the boxes for the 19+ rating, as showcased by the accompanying content descriptors for aspects like violence, crime, fear/horror, and language. It’s extremely rare for Star Wars games to get such high age ratings. Last year’s brilliant Star Wars Jedi Survivor came away with a PEGI 12 rating in the UK and T for Teen in the United States, despite having some pretty dark sequences.

If you’ve ever dreamed of a game that is essentially Grand Theft Auto 5 with a heavy splash of Star Wars antics, then it looks like Ubisoft is making those dreams a reality. The game’s reveal had everything from free roaming on shady planets to interstellar dogfights to evade the Empire, and we can’t wait to forge our own reputation as a formidable space scoundrel. We’ll only know for sure if Ubisoft can deliver on its lofty goals when the Star Wars Outlaws release date arrives.
