Fallout 4’s next-gen upgrade to PS5 is a mess for PS Plus subscribers

The next-gen Fallout 4 update is out now, but PS Plus copies of Bethesda’s RPG don’t seem to be compatible with the long-awaited upgrade from PS4 to PS5.

Friday, April 26, 2024 Bethesda are now aware of the PS Plus issue for Fallout 4 players, and are investigating a fix to roll out soon.

18 months on from when it was first revealed, Bethesda’s massive Fallout 4 update is now available for PlayStation and Xbox players. More than just a patch for the hit RPG, the Fallout 4 next-gen upgrade is a fully native version of the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, accompanied by some highly requested features. While the rollout has begun for the update, those of you with PS Plus copies of the game might not be able to join in on the fun – for now.

That’s right, some PlayStation players may need to delay their trip back to The Commonwealth, as Fallout 4’s revamp as a new PS5 game is getting off to a less than perfect start. The huge 56 GB Fallout 4 next-gen update appears to only work if you bought a copy of the acclaimed RPG game outright, whether that is digital or on disc. However, a large portion of players likely claimed Fallout 4 when it joined PS Plus, becoming an essential free PS Plus game to get your hands on.

Consistent complaints of issues with the Fallout 4 update are mounting on social media, with no response from Bethesda clarifying the issue at the time of writing. Because PS5 players technically don’t ‘own’ Fallout 4 through PS Plus, this is likely the factor stopping players from their fill of next-gen goodness. That’s because access to any free game claimed via PS Plus is bound to your subscription, and whether it is active or not.

Some players believe it is a poor show from Bethesda and Sony – for example, ‘theprodigcalscum’ says that “if the PS5 update wasn’t available to people who had Fallout 4 via PS Plus, [I wish] that it could’ve been specified.”

What is strange, though, is that Xbox Game Pass subscribers appear to be able to access the open world game upgrade. Perhaps because Bethesda is an Xbox/Microsoft aligned brand, the matter of Xbox Series X|S owners downloading the update is a non-issue. Bethesda has only addressed the matter of mods and Creation Club content not working, but seem to be becoming aware of the PS Plus problem. A message from a Bethesda Discord moderator explains that the studio is “looking into if it is supposed to be available with PS Plus or not.”

Despite this bizarre issue, the Fallout 4 next-gen update is now available for PS5 and Xbox platforms. Just make sure you’ve got a purchased copy of one of the best games in Bethesda’s library, for now.
