In this current age of live service games, it doesn’t get much better than Helldivers 2. Arrowhead continues to knock it out the park with post-launch content, but the road to the PS5 hit’s success was laid by its underrated predecessor. If you never played the first Helldivers game, then you’re in luck, as the new PlayStation Store May Savings sale will let you spread democracy with a massive 60% discount.
Alongside a smattering of new PS5 games, including this former Xbox exclusive, the May Savings sale brings Helldivers Super Earth Ultimate Edition down to just $15.99/£9.99. Normally, the first entry into Arrowhead’s co-op game series retails for $39.99/£24.99, which is the same price as Helldivers 2. You don’t have long to claim this superb deal, though. According to Sony, the May Savings sale will conclude on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
Unlike Helldivers 2, the first game is played from a 3D top-down perspective, as opposed to the third-person action you’re used to. You’ll be facing off familiar threats like the Terminids, Automatons (then called Cyborgs), and the Illuminate. The latter is set to appear in the multiplayer game’s sequel soon, as Arrowhead continues to tease their arrival among the stars. Getting acquainted with this new enemy race early could be beneficial for you and your squad, as we anticipate they’ll be even more devastating than the war of Malevelon Creek.
As for the game’s objectives, you’ll feel right at home, as missions play out just as they would in Helldivers 2. As you’ll know, nothing is ever easy in the Helldivers universe, but thankfully there’s a gnarly array of weapons and Stratagems to use, many of which are yet to appear in Helldivers 2.
This includes the absolutely badass Saber sword, a weapon that we desperately want to be resurrected. Even with Helldivers 2 becoming one of the best PS5 games out there, the community for Helldivers 1 is still going strong, and you’ll easily find matches to join.
