Call of Duty’s new Warzone map is giving us major Verdansk vibes

If you're looking forward to the future of Warzone, Call of Duty is teasing its new Warzone map again and it looks like Verdansk was a huge inspiration for it.

Are you a fan of the current Warzone map Al Mazrah? Well, depending on your response to that rhetorical question, you’ll be pleased or saddened to learn that it looks like it’s going to be replaced. Just like when Caldera replaced Verdansk ’84 when Vanguard came out, Call of Duty is planning to replace Al Mazrah with a new Warzone map when Modern Warfare 3 drops. We don’t know all the details just yet, but recent images of this new map give us serious Verdansk vibes – and we’re not mad.

While Modern Warfare 3 might be one of the best competitive FPS games available on Xbox and PS5, Warzone is hoping to fight back against its peers to become one of the best battle royale games on the block. While we don’t know about any gameplay changes yet, or if there are going to be any at all, we do know a little bit more about the map going into Call of Duty Next on October 5. Thanks to the new Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer reveal trailer, we have another brief look at the new map to mull over. However, things don’t quite add up.

If you want to give that a look, though, you can here:

Earlier in the week, we got a new glimpse at the Warzone map and it bears a striking resemblance to Verdansk. It wasn’t identical, but the visual language seems similar and the color palette is as close as it gets.

However, rumors talk about this map as if it’s going to be based on Las Almas, something that was teased in the Modern Warfare 2 campaign mission El Sin Nombre. While this sounds like a solid theory, the new images of the new Warzone map feature buildings with what appears to be Russian-language signage. This isn’t something you would see in Las Almas, and is something we saw in Verdansk.

Will Verdansk return in MW3, though? Well, when it comes to the campaign, that does seem to be the case. Beyond that, though, we’re really not sure. Verdansk was hit with a nuke, something that would make the location both ruined and dangerous for a long time after – certainly longer than the time difference between the end of the Modern Warfare 2019 narrative and the upcoming Modern Warfare 3.

All we can say right now is that it’s clear that Verdansk was something of an inspiration for the new map and we’re excited to learn more at Call of Duty Next soon. You can find out more about how to watch COD Next right here and how Warzone Season 6 sees this spooky feature make a frightful return. We know the Modern Warfare 3 release date is almost here, but there’s a lot of fun to be had between now and then.
