Modern Warfare 3 Zombies marks a franchise-first for Call of Duty, as the beloved survival mode finally merges with the Modern Warfare franchise. This won’t just be any ordinary fight, though, as MW3 Zombies is an open-world experience with big guns and even bigger threats to deal with. Here’s what you can expect when the Modern Warfare 3 release date arrives.
COD Zombies pioneers Treyarch return for Modern Warfare 3, which will be “an all-new open-world” take on battling the undead. “For the first time in the Modern Warfare universe, players can team up with other squads to survive and fight massive hordes of the undead in the largest Call of Duty zombies map ever,” says Activision in a recent statement.
It’s a great time for COD Zombies fans who love digging into the deeper lore, as MW3 Zombies “tells an unearthly Dark Aether story set in the Modern Warfare universe with missions, core Zombies features, and secrets to discover.” The Dark Aether storyline began with Black Ops Cold War, spinning off from the conclusion of the Aether saga from Black Ops 4.
Vanguard continued this storyline, but with the action shifting to the current day, the potential for some wild narrative developments is an enthralling prospect. The new mode appears to take influence from Outbreak mode, which debuted with Black Ops Cold War. Similarly, the game mode utilized open-world design, though interaction with the environment wasn’t as involved as other COD modes like DMZ or Warzone.
Players will engage in an “open world PvE extraction survival experience where core Zombies features come together with new mechanics, and they face off against some of the biggest enemies in Call of Duty history.” As you can see above, we’re seeing the return of Dark Aether enemies like the Mimic. When it comes to the “biggest enemies”, a battle using MW3 loadouts to combat an Orda could be excellent.
