New MW3 Mastery Camos set to ditch MW2’s worst Camo Challenges

If you're sick of chasing Longshot Kills for Mastery Camos, you'll be pleased to know that this is going to change in Modern Warfare 3.

If you can believe it, Modern Warfare 3 is almost here and Call of Duty is finally detailing what players can expect when it comes to the Camo Challenges and the Mastery Camos available in Multiplayer and Modern Warfare Zombies. Following a few small tweaks to the system we saw in Modern Warfare 2, MW3 players are confident that the Modern Warfare 3 Camo Challenges ditch the most frustrating part about unlocking Mastery Camos in recent years – Longshot Kills – and they might be right.

Now, we don’t know for certain whether this new Call of Duty game is going to be one of the best FPS games of all time or not, but Modern Warfare 3 is definitely poised to be a decent entry in the series. With all the MW3 maps reimagined classics, and a full suite of MW3 guns to run around those maps with, the forgettable Modern Warfare 3 campaign is doing little to dampen players’ excitement about this new release. In fact, after the latest Call of Duty Blog post, that excitement is only growing.

Ahead of the full Modern Warfare 3 release date, Call of Duty is detailing all the new Mastery Camos and Camo Challenges players will find in Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer and Modern Warfare 3 Zombies. Whether you like the look of these Mastery Camos or not, all this new information has fans convinced that the troublesome ‘Longshot Kills’ challenges – Camo Challenges that plague MW2 players chasing Polyatomic and Orion – are a thing of the past.

As the aforementioned MW3 camos blog post explains, Modern Warfare 3 players looking to unlock Forged (the second Mastery Camo and the equivalent of MW2’s Platinum) will need to unlock Gilded (the first Mastery Camo and the equivalent of MW2’s Gold) for all the weapons in the same category and then complete “an individual Forged Challenge tailored to the specific weapon”. The example Call of Duty uses here is a challenge to “get 3 kills without dying 10 times” for the MCW assault rifle – which doesn’t sound so bad to us.

What has this got to do with Longshot Kills, though? Well, the fact that we need to ask that question is entirely the point; Call of Duty doesn’t mention them at all when it comes to unlocking Mastery Camos in Modern Warfare 3. However, it does mention them when it comes to talking about the Modern Warfare 2 Mastery Camos and the Camo Challenges you need to complete to unlock them – which you can actually do in Modern Warfare 3 if you’re using the right weapon.

In this brief reiteration of what players will need to do if they want to unlock Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion for all the best Modern Warfare 2 guns, Call of Duty details that the requirements for the Platinum camo Camo Challenges are “usually a certain number of Longshot Kills for the weapon”. That isn’t going to change going into Modern Warfare 3, for the Modern Warfare 2 guns, but does seem to suggest that the “tailored” Camo Challenges for the new Mastery Camos available for Modern Warfare 3’s weapons will be different.

This change, as this Reddit post is an example of, is proving popular among fans eager to jump into Modern Warfare 3. However, Call of Duty doesn’t actually specify what the Camo Challenges will be when you reach this stage chasing Mastery Camos. So, while you might not see Camo Challenges just asking you to get Longshot Kills, there’s every chance these requirements will still feature at some point. We can imagine, though, that SMGs and shotguns will be exempt – at the very least.

Thankfully, Modern Warfare 3 is almost upon us and we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out what all the Camo Challenges actually require players to do. In the meantime, the new Call of Duty campaign is convincing fans that we’re headed back to Verdansk in Warzone after all and this new leak reveals all the Modern Warfare 3 Season 1 weapons you can expect to see introduced to both MW3 and Warzone when the Modern Warfare 3 Season 1 release date rolls around. Yeah, there’s going to be a lot of content for you to enjoy.
