We never thought that those early adventures with Altair and Ezio would lead to witchcraft, but Assassin’s Creed Hexe could be a spellbinding entry – literally. Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed sequel is rumored to take place in the Holy Roman Empire, and it may feature some wild supernatural abilities, as well as the overhaul of this long-forgotten AC Syndicate mechanic.
In a recent report from Insider Gaming, details surrounding the new PS5 game and new Xbox game allege that Assassin’s Creed Hexe is focused around a young witch named Elsa, who is able to use otherworldly powers. The details of exactly what abilities she can use are very slim, but footage received by Insider Gaming apparently depicts Elsa possessing a cat to use it as a distraction during stealth. It might not be something as extravagant as flight or lightning, but hey, it’s a start.
In the past, previous entries in the RPG game series have given characters like Kassandra immortality, but only for a brief period of time. Of course, players can move around with near-superhuman agility and speed, but giving players actual supernatural abilities is an interesting (and exciting) proposition. If Elsa can control animals, maybe twisting the minds of NPCs isn’t out of the question either. We reckon abilities like buffing health could appear, but anything beyond that may be a stretch too far, even for Assassin’s Creed’s standards.
Furthermore, Insider Gaming purports that AC Hexe will resurrect the Fear system last seen in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s ‘Jack The Ripper’ DLC. The expansion enabled players to play as the notorious serial killer, continuously increasing their Fear level across London by completing various acts or elimination types, like Brutal Takedowns. Given Hexe’s setting, the return of this mechanic in a highly skeptical time makes sense. After all, you only have to watch Robert Eggers’ The Witch to see how effective the paranoia of witchcraft is.
The report also claims that the Assassin’s Creed Hexe release date is poised for a 2026 launch. Although Assassin’s Creed Red is supposedly coming later this year, we can’t help but feel more hyped for Hexe if casting spells (and controlling cute cats) is on the table.
While the transition to larger, sprawling experiences has polarized players since AC Origins debuted, Hexe will supposedly continue the smaller, more linear style that last year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage leaned towards. So, if you’re looking for a more condensed open world game experience, Hexe could be just the adventure to embark on.
