Everything we know about Assassin’s Creed Hexe

If you’re looking for information on Assassin’s Creed Hexe, then here's a collection of everything we could gather on the upcoming AC game.

Assassin's Creed Hexe Release Date: An assasin and the logo can be seen

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Hexe is shaping up to be one of the most interesting and unique AC games yet. While Hexe is just a codename at this stage, and Ubisoft hasn’t explicitly confirmed all that much about the game yet, the publisher has left plenty of clues that hint at what it’ll entail.

Hexe is probably one of our most anticipated new PS5 games and new Xbox games in Ubisoft’s pipeline. It was announced all the way back in September 2022 and will be released some time after 2024’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, so the gap between it being revealed and actually being playable is going to be painfully long. Nevertheless, here’s all the information on Assassin’s Creed Hexe that’s out there so far.

Who’s developing Assassin’s Creed Hexe?

In 2021, it was announced by Ubisoft that all future Assassin’s Creed projects (which includes both standalone games and the mysterious Assassin’s Creed Infinity hub experience) would be developed jointly between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec.

While Montreal is largely responsible for developing most of the Assassin’s Creed series, Quebec has also brought you the likes of AC Syndicate and AC Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe setting

Based on official teasers that were deciphered by the community, Assassin’s Creed Hexe should take place in a 16th-century central European setting which will focus primarily on the infamous witch-hunting of the period. You know what that means? The it is most likely to be in areas of the Holy Roman Empire.

While this witch-hunting phenomenon was something almost every European nation experienced in one way or another throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, it was perhaps its most violent in the areas that make up modern-day Germany – and regions like the Duchy of Bavaria, Duchy of Swabia, and Lombardy. This is where we think we might see Project Hexe take place.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has yet to explore Germany and its history in any meaningful capacity. It’s widely accepted in modern history that the European witch hunts of the early Elizabethan Era featured several waves of quite substantial witch hunts – launched in southern Germany throughout the 1560s and 1570s.

So how do we know this? Well, Hexe’s initial teaser trailer ends with the AC logo appearing in front of various letters from the old Magi alphabet. When translated into modern day German, the outer ring reads: ‘We work in the dark to serve the light’. That, of course, is a phrase synonymous with the Assassin’s Creed series.

In the centre, three other German words are spelled out: ‘haus’ (house), ‘rache’ (revenge), and ‘mephisto’. Mephisto, or Mephistopheles, is a character from a famous German legend known as Faust, who is believed to be an agent of the devil.

Then the final nail in the coffin that all but confirms Assassin’s Creed setting and theme is the fact that, in German, ‘hexe’ means ‘witch’. Pretty conclusive, if you ask us.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe genre

When it comes to what AC Hexe will be like to play and what genre it falls into, we have just two vague comments from franchise executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté.

The first game during the initial reveal of Codename Hexe during Ubisoft Forward 2022. In the showcase, Côté simply says that Hexe will be a “very different type of Assassin’s Creed game”.

The second came in this interview with IGN, in which he confirmed that the game will not be a big RPG game like Hexe’s predecessor, AC Shadows.

Even though we don’t know too much about the Assassin’s Creed Hexe just yet, it’s still sounding like it could be one of the best games in the series.
