If you want to play one of the best horror games of 2023 for free, Xbox players can look forward to playing Dead Space on Game Pass just in time for Halloween.

We know it might sound like a gimmicky marketing line, but Xbox Game Pass really is the best deal in gaming and October 2023 proves that. Xbox players have a lot to look forward to this month; one of 2023’s best horror games is going to be free to play with an active Game Pass subscription in a matter of days – which is, importantly, just in time for Halloween. Yes, that’s right, Dead Space on Game Pass is finally a thing.

If you take a moment to look at the complete list of all the Xbox Game Pass games you can play with an active membership, it’s easy to get a little overwhelmed. Xbox players are spoilt for choice, with some of the best RPG games and best FPS games available on the service. However, while all of the best Xbox Game Pass games are worth playing at some point, this service is lacking when it comes to the scares. That, with Halloween right around the corner, is a real shame. Thankfully, though, 2023’s Dead Space, which is easily one of the best horror games out there, is joining Xbox Game Pass very soon.

A handful of days before Halloween, on Thursday October 26, Motive Studio’s impressive Dead Space remake will be free with Game Pass as one of the seven new October 2023 Xbox Game Pass games. It joins alongside Frog Detective The Entire Mystery and Mineko’s Night Market – two cozy indie games.

This month also sees F1 Manager 2023 join Xbox Game Pass just days after developer Frontier Developments reveals layoffs are coming. The other games being added to the service are Like A Dragon Ishin (October 17), Cities Skylines 2 (October 24), Headbangers Rhythm Royale (October 31), and Jusant (October 31).

While the main story beats are the same as the original, this Dead Space remake overhauls almost every aspect of the experience – and even gives loveable engineer Isaac Clarke a voice (something introduced in Dead Space 2). It’s not just scarier than the original, but it’s even more satisfying too. With a number of alterations to the order of events and the way the story weaves together, Motive Studio has done an excellent job of bringing this iconic title up to standard when we think of what we expect from a horror game today. If you want a little more on why you should play, you can read our Dead Space review right here. Although, with it joining Game Pass soon, you’ll soon experience it all yourself.

If, though, you’re looking for something else, there are some other great free Xbox Game Pass horror games out there to try. Oh, and if you’re on PlayStation, you’ll be pleased to know the free PS Plus games for October 2023 also offer up a decent horror game for you to check out. It’s similar enough to Dead Space that you should have just as much fun bashing your way through a supernatural sci-fi nightmare as you would on the USG Ishimura.
