How to get the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom

To get the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom you need to do the following:

  • Complete 20 shrines to get a second stamina bar
  • Farm enemies in the Garudo Desert for good weapons and Gibdo Bones
  • Grab high-quality gear
  • Visit Korok Forest via The Depths by ascending from underground
  • Enter the Deku Tree and fall into its chasm
  • Defeat Phantom Ganon
  • Talk to the Deku Tree and complete the memory
  • Remove the sword from the Dragon in the sky

The first steps of getting the Master Sword are pretty easy, just work you way up to a second stamina bar and also farm high-quality gear and items, as well as Gibdo Bones from the Garudo Desert. From there, you then want to head down to the Depths via the Minshi Woods. This method comes from ‘PhillyBeatzU’ on YouTube who has a great way to get the sword early. But, you can get it in other ways too once clearing the corruption from the Korok Forest.

From the last step, follow the path underground until the Korok Forest is above you, as you cannot enter it from above ground. Once at a monument where you can Ascend, use the ability to get above ground. Once above ground, interact with the shrine to give yourself a fast travel point. Head into the Deku Tree and down into the chasm at the back of it.

Take out explosive arrows, other AOE arrows, and any explosives you have to destroy the hands which spawn. There are a whole group of these hands, but the AOE effect should take them all out with a few shots. Combining elemental effects can also work.

Following that, Phantom Ganon will spawn, one of the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom bosses. He is incredibly tough and most attacks won’t do much at your current strength. But, the Gibdo Bones you farmed will. Shoot him with critical shots to do a ton of damage, dodging and avoiding hits where you can and healing where necessary.

Avoid the pools of red corruption which will damage you and once Ganon is down the corruption will disappear. From there teleport back up and talk to the Deku Tree who will give you a memory to complete. Then, you will get a quest called Recovering The Hero’s Sword.

Find a good spot and moment when the Dragon is over a tower you can spawn on. This will allow you to jump down and track the Dragon’s location when you have the quest active. Hold on and grab the sword after jumping on him and you will be dropped off in the Sky Islands with the Master Sword in hand.

As mentioned this method is a great way to get the Master Sword early in the game and you can watch the full guide from PhillyBeatzU below:

As an iconic and reoccurring weapon in the Zelda franchise, this is definitely one of the coolest ways the weapon has been obtained in the series so far, especially as it makes a triumphant return in Tears of the Kingdom and plays a key role.

The Master Sword is a recurring legendary sword in The Legend of Zelda series, being Link’s weapon against evil since The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past in 1992. In Tears of the Kingdom, this weapon begins to decay and damage at the beginning of the game after it has been broken, needing to be repaired to its former glory.

The Master Sword, originally created by the goddess Hylia herself as the Goddess Sword, was later reforged by Link and Fi in Skyward Sword. Since then, the weapon has served as Link’s weapon against great evil. However, the Master Sword is said to choose its master, someone that has endured tests of courage, wisdom, and power before they can wield such a powerful weapon.
