Though many PS5 players could probably list a few improvements for it, PS Plus is rounding out the year on a high note for Sony. The long-running subscription service has seen plenty of new titles arrive over the course of the year, and now, PS Plus is getting singled out for its strengths. Oh, and the PS5 just absolutely smashed a major record along the way.
According to a new report from Business Wire, Sony is probably about to crack out the cheese and crackers this holiday season, as the outlet details that the tech giant has sold over 50 million PS5 units. The console, which launched back in November 2020, is entering a fresh era, as the PS5 Slim model begins to phase out standard units. “Thanks to the support of PlayStation fans globally, the PS5 console has experienced strong momentum this year, driven by a slate of highly popular games,” says Sony in a new statement.
Furthermore, in Sony’s efforts to improve PS Plus, the report cites that a “continued focus on bringing innovation to the gaming experience, including PS5 game streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members” is part of this success. PS5 cloud streaming arrived earlier this year, allowing players to sample some new PS5 games without having to wait hours for a large download to be completed. Not every single title is available through this method of play yet, and it isn’t compatible with the PS Portal handheld either.
Nevertheless, Sony expresses that alongside these strides to bolster PS Plus, this milestone isn’t possible without the work of numerous talented studios. CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, says that “achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners.” Additionally, Ryan notes how this holiday season is the first time in PS5 history that the console is widely available on a consistent basis.
“We’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles, so anyone who wants to get one can get one,” Ryan shares. The sales of the PS5 have no doubt seen a fluctuation as of late with the arrival of games like Spider-Man 2, which has set its own franchise records following rave reviews, including a 10/10 score in The Loadout’s own Spider-Man 2 review.
So, don’t just take Sony’s word for it. Here are all the free PS Plus games you can jump into right now.
