Before Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League gave us a sprawling DC Comics co-op adventure, we had our first taste of that concept with Gotham Knights. Like Rocksteady Studios’ looter shooter, the WB Games Montreal action RPG garnered its fair share of detractors, but there’s actually a worthwhile Bat Family story to explore. Now, recent PS Plus discounts mean you can bag the underrated PS5 game for a steal of a price.
You’ve undoubtedly seen plenty of criticism levied at Gotham Knights since its release in 2022. While my colleague’s at The Loadout also drew on its shortcomings in our Gotham Knights review, I’m here to tell you that this is a great open world game worth picking up. In fact, I fought the case for it in our run-down of the best games of 2022. If you head over to the PlayStation Store, you purchase the game for $16.99/£12.99 as long as you’ve got an active PS Plus subscription.
There isn’t long to claim this brilliant price slash, though. You have until Monday, March 4, 2024, to claim this discount. If you skipped over Gotham Knights on release, then let me catch you up. Set outside the Arkhamverse that Rocksteady created, WB Games Montreal’s take on Batman lore puts Robin, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Nightwing in charge of protecting the streets of Gotham City.
That’s because Batman has perished at the hands of Ra’s al Ghul, which leads the Bat Family down a rabbit hole into the sinister history of Gotham’s heritage. The narrative is genuinely enthralling, pulling on threads of DC Comics history in exciting ways, while offering new spins on familiar lore too.
It also happens to be one of the best co-op games around, as you can team up with another friend to explore Gotham City and beat the main story. During my initial time with the game upon release, I ended up beating the story twice with a friend, and we had plenty of laughs along the way. As Gotham Knights leans on RPG game elements, you can level up your characters with all manner of gear, each equipped with various buffs to deal damage with. Personally, playing as Robin is a major highlight as he’s so damn agile.
There’s also Heroic Assault mode, which lets you play in 4-player co-op to tackle up to 30 floors of increasingly difficult enemies and an eventual boss fight. Of course, there are some caveats that bring Gotham Knights down a few notches. The lack of a 60 FPS performance mode is still disappointing to this day, and I wish there was more vehicle variety beyond the motorcycle. It’d also be nice to play the story with 4-players, a feat that Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League manages effortlessly.
Nevertheless, there’s a story worth experiencing here. Before you purchase it outright, you can play it as one of many free PS Plus games too. But for less than $20, Gotham Knights is worth adding to your library permanently.
