Final Fantasy 16 metacritic opencritic review scores: an image of a man with a big chin from the RPG

The Final Fantasy 16 release date is just hours away now and there are thousands of Final Fantasy fans out there preparing to jump into Valisthea with all the new Final Fantasy 16 characters and their Eikons. Whether you’re still toying with the idea of splashing on a pre-order or whether you’re grabbing your snacks for a late night with Clive, you’ll be pleased to know that Final Fantasy 16 is a hit. In fact, FF16 is one of the best PS5 RPG games ever according to the review scores on Metacritic and OpenCritic – and it’s broken into the top ten when it comes to the best games on the platform so far.

Yep, that’s right. If you were worried that Clive wouldn’t be able to live up to the hype, you’ll be pleased to know that Final Fantasy 16 is currently the seventh-highest rated PS5 game of all time – according to OpenCritic at the time of writing – with a Top Critic Average of 91. When it comes to all the best PS5 games released this year, FF16 sits in third just behind Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4 remake – two excellent titles.

Interestingly, Metacritic has Final Fantasy 16 listed as an 88-rated game and has calculated a lower average score than OpenCritic. This doesn’t quite put this game in the top ten PS5 games, but it does put it on a par with critically-acclaimed hits like the PS5 remake of The Last of Us Part 1, It Takes Two, Deathloop, and Horizon Forbidden West.

While it currently boasts average scores of 88 and 91, The Loadout’s FF16 review slaps an even bigger number on this incredible PS5 exclusive. Our very own Callum Self was blown away by the game, which he says “sets a new, very high bar” for future Final Fantasy games to aim for. We’ll see if that bar gets pushed even higher when the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date rolls around.

In both our view, and the views of plenty of other critics, you shouldn’t sleep on this game. Whether you’re a Final Fantasy fan or not, it should definitely be one your consider sinking some time into. In fact, you can check out the Final Fantasy 16 demo now, if you’re not convinced.

With an impressive map and more than enough bosses to tackle, Final Fantasy 16 is easily one of the best PS5 RPG games available right now.
