How does Diablo 4 PvP work?

Players can engage in PvP by entering Diablo 4 Fields of Hatred locations. In these areas, all players are free to attack each other, though there will be other activities to complete as well, including quests and events.

In this Diablo 4 endgame activity, you will earn Shards of Hatred by killing other players or mobs, and completing activities. As you collect more Shards of Hatred, bring them to an Altar of Extraction where you can turn them into Red Dust. Be careful though, as other players in the PvP zone will be notified when an Altar of Extraction is being used. It’s likely other players will want to steal your hard earned Shards of Hatred by killing you in PvP combat.

If you die, whether to another player or an AI opponent, you will drop any Shards of Hatred you have collected. This makes Diablo 4 PvP quite the tense activity, with your rewards not being secured until you have extracted your Shards into Red Dust.

Before you head into Diablo 4 PvP, it’s also worth noting that the PvP areas are not matchmade or balanced for groups. Described as “not a place for honor” in a developer update Q&A, the Fields of Hatred are an open free for all, with solo players and groups in one location. With that said, there are different player “buckets” based on character levels. Therefore, while you will run into both solo players and groups in PvP, players will all be of a similar level. This will hopefully help avoid issues of certain players dominating the PvP zones, though you will have to avoid groups if you’re playing solo.

Now you know everything there is to know about Diablo 4 PvP so far. If you’re venturing into these PvP areas, make sure you have the best Diablo 4 build first. Looking to the future of the game, it’s possible PvP could also see some updates when the Diablo 4 Season 1 release date arrives on all platforms.
