Bungie’s back (after a week off) with another This Week in Destiny blog post for Destiny 2 players to digest. With some changes coming to numerous Crucible modes and several playlist updates for this PvP experience arriving when Destiny 2 Season 23 rolls around, there’s a lot to look forward to – if you like going toe-to-toe with your fellow Guardians, anyway. However, the highlight of this is the confirmation that Sparrow Control is coming. Yes, long-time Destiny players, we’re one step closer to seeing Sparrow Racing League back.
Bungie’s Destiny 2 might be one of the best FPS games out there right now, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had outside of shooting endless waves of Fallen and Vex. One great way to take a break from chasing the best Destiny 2 weapons, which can feel endless at times, is to ride around on your Sparrow. Despite being an important traversal mechanic present since the series’ start, Bungie rarely takes advantage of this feature beyond prompting players to use it as a method to get from A to B in an open-world environment.
The one time Bungie really did take advantage of Sparrows, though, was through the limited-time Sparrow Racing League event playlist – and it was glorious. We don’t want to get anyone too excited, but the latest This Week in Destiny blog post seems to be taking us one step closer to the return of this fantastic mode.
In Season 23, alongside the introduction of simplified 3v3 playlists, Bungie’s throwing a new game mode into the mix for those of you hopping into the 6v6 Unranked Crucible playlist: Sparrow Control. Available on select weeks throughout Season 23, this mode is exactly what you think it will be; as explained by Bungie, “it’s Control, but with Sparrows”.
This, which we know is some wishful thinking, could be Bungie’s way of testing Sparrow-based PvP modes again before bringing back Sparrow Racing League – a mode players haven’t seen since January 2017. While this mode didn’t transform Destiny into one of the best racing games of all time, it was a lot of fun. As you can see below, Sparrow Racing League saw six players compete in a three-lap Sparrow race around a circuit with dangerous obstacles, oncoming enemy fire, and boosters – it’s a little like Bungie’s version of Mario Kart.
A handful of weeks ago, in this This Week in Destiny blog post, Bungie revealed that all Sparrows will be getting a bit of a buff to bring them in line with the Always on Time Sparrow – which is quite a bit faster than the other Sparrows on offer. So, provided this update works as intended when the Destiny 2 Season 23 release date rolls around, introducing Sparrow Racing League again and keeping it balanced would be a lot easier than before – in theory, anyway. Almost all the Sparrows will have the same base speed.
However, only time will tell whether we ever see Sparrow Racing League back. This is all speculation at this point. Those of you hankering for more Sparrow-based action, though, can look forward to the chance to play Sparrow Control in the coming weeks.
While we wait for that, you should make sure you’re using the best Destiny 2 Titan build, the best Destiny 2 Warlock build, and the best Destiny 2 Hunter build ahead of your next game in Crucible. Oh, and Bungie is also solving a Destiny 2 mystery five years in the making – something you’re definitely going to want to know about heading into Season of the Wish.
