Bungie’s solving a five-year-old mystery ahead of Destiny 2 Season 23

Ahead of Destiny 2 Season 23 and The Final Shape, Bungie's solving one of this FPS' biggest mysteries and this has some huge implications.

Bungie’s latest Destiny 2 Weekly Reset might be the most important one yet, with dramatic new story details revealed as we head into Destiny 2 Season 23 and The Final Shape. We finally know what the final wish for the Wish Wall in the Last Wish raid is and the reward we’re getting is ripe with potential – but brings a lot of danger, too.

Despite the recent complaints, Destiny 2 is one of the best FPS games out there right now and it has been for a while. One major reason why this is the case is the story Bungie is telling – and has been telling – for the last six years. It might be confusing at times, and there’s a lot of lore for new players to catch up on, but it’s an epic in every sense of the word. And, the fact that a seemingly ordinary Weekly Reset update can just casually drop the 15th wish for the Wish Wall on us – an incredibly important moment in the Destiny 2 narrative – is something of a testament to this.

For those of you wondering why this is such a big deal for Destiny 2 players ahead of the Destiny 2 Season 23 release date and the eventual Destiny 2 The Final Shape release date, allow us to explain.

When Bungie released the Forsaken expansion in September 2018, Destiny 2 players literally spent months scouring the game for wishes – which are essentially codes that you can put into the Wish Wall during the Last Wish raid to receive rewards and reveal secrets. With these wishes adding entirely new areas to the raid, revealing bonus chests packed with loot, and even changing the voice of some bosses, they’re definitely something that’s worth the effort. They’re also a great way to increase your chances at getting one of the best Destiny 2 weapons, too.

Why is finding this 15th wish really such a big deal, though? Well, because players have always known that there’s 15 wishes to use on the Wish Wall in the Last Wish raid, but they’ve only ever been able to find 14 of them – that’s five whole years without knowing what this final wish is. Well, until the latest Weekly Reset update from Bungie.

Finally, as we head into the aptly named Season of the Wish, Destiny 2 players know what we’re in for – and it could be huge for the narrative about to unfold in The Final Shape. Accessed through completing the latest Imbaru Engine puzzle, a new cutscene reveals that Savathun is actually giving us (as in, the Destiny 2 community) the 15th wish. For those of you still working your way through The Witch Queen expansion, she’s going through some things and it turns out she isn’t exactly the enemy we once thought she was.

With the power to effectively rewrite reality, this could be huge in the fight against The Witness – although, wishes from an Ahamkara at the Wish Wall don’t always work out exactly how you would expect them to. An example of this would be wishing you had super strength, but your bones breaking whenever you try to lift something heavy because they can’t support that weight.

Anyway, as you can see for yourself in the video above, all of this reveals an untainted Ahamkara Egg for you to take. With Ahamkara being incredibly powerful shapeshifters with the ability to grant their own wishes – we know, we know, that’s a lot of wishing – it looks like this will be key to the narrative of Season 23 and the story leading into The Final Shape.

Bungie’s recently-revealed Destiny 2 Season 23 promotional art suggests that the Ahamkara Egg is going to hatch in the upcoming season – by showing what certainly looks like a younger Ahamkara coming out of a portal. So, that means we’re going to have a very powerful wish to play with – which could be very important.

We think it’s most likely that we (as the self-insert main character of the Destiny 2 narrative) will either wish a way into The Traveler in pursuit of The Witness, or wish for a way to kill The Witness. Of course, both will have huge ramifications and The Final Shape trailers show that nothing is really as it seems heading into this final expansion of the Light and Darkness Saga. However, using a wish with this much power on anything less impactful would feel like a bit of a waste.

All of that, though, we think is coming a little later down the line. With each wish often having unforeseen results, we can imagine the Season of the Wish will see us working out what the best wish is and how to actually wish it without the Ahamkara twisting it into something bad (unless this new-born beast is a true ally).

Ultimately, however, only time will tell how everything plays out. It’s an exciting step towards the conclusion we’ve all been waiting for, but it’s not necessarily a step that makes a lot of sense – at least for now. While we wait for it to make sense, though, you can check out the best Destiny 2 Hunter build, the best Destiny 2 Titan build, and the best Destiny 2 Warlock build right here. Preparing yourself for the upcoming fight is going to be vital, and Bungie is promising that this new Destiny 2 DLC will be “unforgettable” – which, probably means there’s a big battle or two to come.
