Rumors surrounding MW3 Zombies have been rife in the run-up to the Modern Warfare 3 reveal, and now Activision appears to be listening to your pleas for more hellish action. New marketing for the latest Call of Duty entry is rolling out via WhatsApp, teasing the fate of Warzone‘s Al Mazrah ahead of the Modern Warfare 3 release date, and the potential arrival of undead enemies.
Forget messaging your group chat for a moment. If you head over to WhatsApp and find the official Call of Duty contact via the number ‘+1 (202) 918-3022’, you can receive intel that promises “something is coming soon, [a] major opportunity.” You’ll have to opt-in to MW3 text messages first, but once you’ve typed the prompt ‘Zombies’, you’ll be sent a link to an audio file.
The eerie snippet, which you can listen to here, unleashes the unmistakable shrieks found only in COD Zombies. There isn’t any indication beyond it as to what to expect lore-wise, but MW3 Zombies is an important moment for the franchise. While we’ve seen offshoots like Exo-Zombies, WW2 Zombies, and the William Wyler saga (Infinite Warfare), this is the first time a Modern Warfare game has potentially included the fan-favorite game mode.
Further confirmation of MW3 Zombies comes via the latest COD blog post, which teases: “Did someone say Zombies? More information coming soon on the new Modern Warfare Zombies: The largest Zombies offering to date.”
Modern Warfare 3 (2011) included Survival mode, which pits the player against AI enemies around various locations in the game’s campaign. Its wave-based gameplay and weapon system certainly share a lot with the thrill of COD Zombies, but it doesn’t quite hit the same way. According to ‘CharlieINTEL‘, the Battlenet launcher for PC players, Treyarch is listed alongside Modern Warfare 3’s development team roster, suggesting that the COD Zombies creators are back to shepherd the next era of undead carnage.
Treyarch also returned after Black Ops Cold War to assist MW3 developer Sledgehammer Games with Vanguard’s iteration of the game mode, though its execution left a lot to be desired for newcomers and hardcore Zombies fans alike. It is likely that Modern Warfare 3 Zombies could be the start of new lore, separating itself from the Dark Aether Saga seen in Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard.
However, with multiversal rifts and confusing timelines to follow, anything is possible. Captain Price x Adler team up? We’d love to see that again. For now, don’t miss the MW3 reveal event and all you need to know about the MW3 beta.
