May’s rumored PlayStation Showcase 2024 is supposedly just around the corner, and despite the continued silence from Sony it is still expected to go ahead – that is according to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb. While it could arrive at the end of the month, getting in just ahead of Summer Game Fest, there’s every chance the PlayStation Showcase could also land on our screens as early as next week.
“The PlayStation Showcase is happening this month still, apparently,” Grubb says during the latest edition of the Giant Bombcast. “But whether it’s next week or the week after I honestly don’t know. Could be the end of the month, but I won’t be surprised this does actually happen next week – it could happen at any moment.” So when do we reckon Sony will drop the latest looks at all those shiny new PS5 games and PS5 exclusives we’re clamoring for?
A May showcase is a major opportunity for Sony to get the first jab in ahead of Microsoft’s own Xbox Showcase on June 9 – though it seems that Xbox has managed to uppercut itself with its latest round of studio closures going down like a cup of cold sick with fans and media alike. If Sony was to operate reactively to this, then we’d be more inclined to think the presentation would arrive next week.
However, should Sony wish to lead the charge heading into SGF – the first act is always the hardest to follow – then we could be waiting until the end of the month. The last State of Play arrived on January 31, while last year’s showcase landed on May 24. Though that’s enough of a trend to say ‘yep, late May it is,’ September’s State of Play arrived in the middle of the month on the 14th. Regardless of this last point, we’re still banking on a mid-week showcase airing towards the back end of May based on last year’s event timing.
Though everything is still very much grounded in speculation right now, it’s only a matter of time before Sony inevitably reveals the big date. With Silent Hill 2 reportedly making an appearance, the showcase already sounds like it’s going to be an exciting one. We’re also expecting to hear more about the potential new Astro Bot game, Concord, Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, and the rest of the PlayStation lineup slated for release sometime this year. May’s event could also mark the full unveiling of the PS5 Pro, seeing as 2020’s showcase offered up the pricing and release date for the original PS5.
Until then, catch up on the latest from the best PS5 games currently available, such as the new Destiny 2 PvP Map Pack that’s just arrived in Bungie’s hit free shooting game. While you’re here, don’t forget to drop us a follow on Google News – as soon as Sony drops the date, we’ll be sure to let you know.
