New World was all the rage when it initially debuted in 2021 on PC, with streaming giants like ‘shroud’ and ‘Asmongold’ dedicating hours to Amazon Games’ fantasy RPG. If you’ve been fancying a slice of the action on consoles, then your time could be coming, as a New World PS5 version is appearing on the PlayStation Store.
Your next PS5 adventure may take you deep into the depths of New World’s epic lands, as the massive RPG game is advertising what appears to be a brand-new version of the game for PlayStation players. This iteration, dubbed New World: Aeternum, suggests that it will be a slight departure from its PC counterpart. Crucially, it is unknown whether Amazon Games is planning to let Xbox players join in on the fun.
The advert, as spotted by Redditor ‘OMG_R3A11Y’, also bears an indicator that it is a “sponsored” PS Store banner, lending more credence to a reveal at Summer Game Fest. Geoff Keighley and the game’s official social media confirmed that the game would be making an appearance during the two-hour presentation on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. The PlayStation port of the ongoing multiplayer game would mark a significant content drop, as the last major expansion for New World, Rise of the Angry Earth, was released back in October last year.
When New World initially appeared on the MMORPG scene, we were pleasantly surprised by what it had to offer in an extremely saturated genre. In our New World preview in 2021, we noted that “after pretty much rebuilding New World from scratch over the past year with player feedback in mind, Amazon Games looks to finally have a solid game on its hands.”
On the day of launch, New World attracted a staggering one million players. However, this figure has fallen considerably, losing at least 90% of its player base at its worst.
Could a fresh era emerge with its debut on consoles? Potentially, but with online juggernauts like former Xbox exclusive Sea of Thieves recently launching on PS5, it’ll be a fierce battle to lure players away from its 40 million strong player count. Conversely, Destiny 2 is more popular than ever with the release of The Final Shape, its last major expansion that concludes over a decade’s worth of intense lore.
In other gaming news, fresh information from Sony reveals how action packed all the Concord game modes will be, and Helldivers 2’s new Warbond could well be its best ever DLC drop yet.
