In this guide, we will go over what exactly happened and detail everything you need to know about the three core aspects of Destiny 2’s future. These are the Destiny 2 The Witness, Destiny 2 The Traveler, and Destiny 2 The Veil. So, if you want to take a dive into each one, head to our guides and find a general overview of what it all means for the future of Destiny 2 below.
Destiny 2 Lightfall ending explained
At the end of Destiny 2 Lightfall, our Ghost creates a link between The Veil and The Traveler by seemingly using an object of pure Light and pure Darkness. The Witness uses this connection to create a portal transporting both the Traveler and themself somewhere else.
The Veil in this case is made of pure darkness, while our Ghost is made of Light. We know that The Traveler is now gone because both Ikora and Zavala say so in the Tower. They could be talking metaphorically, like its power has been subdued rather than the object completely leaving, after all, it is still on the map and we don’t see it disappear in the cutscene.
But, it is clear that The Witness has used the Traveler’s light to craft this portal, which may be The Final Shape their end goal and destination for whatever they want. The Witness does also say that The Traveler has suffered the fate of both Victim and Perpetrator, which seems to further hint at the long-running backstory between the two entities. Finally, The Witness then says the Traveler can “be free”, although it isn’t clear what that means.
Ultimately, Lightfall left us with more questions than answers but undoubtedly the seasons in Destiny 2 will have us diving into where The Witness has gone and what it wants before the Destiny 2 The Final Shape release date.
What did our ghost do at the end of Destiny 2 Lightfall?
It isn’t clear why our Ghost was being pulled into The Veil in the last of Destiny 2 Lightfall’s missions, attracted to it. It could be because The Veil has some connection to The Darkness (and so might our Ghost), or that The Veil was originally used to establish a connection to the Traveler.
After all, “the line between Light and Dark is so very thin”. This is a line we have heard many times over the last few years and this could be the first real suggestion that both The Light and The Darkness are two sides of the same or a similar coin, just like The Traveler and The Witness. This is speculation on our part, but it does lean into the idea that not everything is as simple as it once seemed.
