Cryptic Call of Duty care packages tease slide cancel coming to MW3

Ahead of more information on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, the developer has sent out cryptic care packages to content creators teasing slide cancel in MW3.

Details might be a little light right now, but Modern Warfare 3 is going to be the next Call of Duty title from Activision. We’re just waiting on the Modern Warfare 3 release date, now. Ahead of the Modern Warfare 3 reveal event, though, the developer is sending out rather cryptic care packages to content creators. While these sorts of marketing packages are usually filled with random promotional items and merchandise, Call of Duty is actually using this round of content creator care packages to tease the return of slide cancel in MW3 – oh, and a little bit of narrative content too.

On August 6, ahead of the MW3 beta dates, Call of Duty sent a number of prominent content creators an odd care package containing some soap, a pair of slides, an old cellphone, and some candy. While these items seem somewhat unrelated at a glance, a number of Call of Duty fans seem to think that this is Activision’s way of cryptically confirming that the slide cancel movement technique is coming back to Call of Duty in Modern Warfare 3.

If you want to know what we’re on about, allow us to explain.

As highlighted by content creator ‘ModernWarzone‘ on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Call of Duty content creator Kris ‘Swagg’ Lamberson was sent one of these cryptic care packages. If the theories are true, each item relates to one syllable of the term ‘slide cancel’ – thus teasing its return.

The slides represent ‘slide’, the candy represents ‘can’, and the cellphone represents ‘cel’.

If you think this is a bit of a reach, the cellphone in question also seems to receive a text message that says “you’ll be expected to more more quickly in Al Mazrah” – this was clipped by ‘PullzeCheck‘.

Of course, this could mean almost anything in isolation. However, with the context clues of the strange care package items, it does seem to suggest that the slide cancel movement technique is coming to Modern Warfare 3 – something that, when taken advantage of, will make movement a little faster.

If you’re looking for a deeper dive on these care packages, Call of Duty content creator ‘WhoIsImmortal‘ has you covered with an explainer below:

As they point out, though, the cellphone is also strikingly similar to the cellphone we see (the man we assume is) Makarov use in the Modern Warfare 2 post-credits scene. This seems more obviously a teaser that we’re going to be seeing this Call of Duty villain a lot more in this sequel. The official Call of Duty social media account shared a short clip of Tyler ‘TeePee’ Polchow opening his package and reading the following note:

“I was barely able to get this out of the prison. No time to explain. Use these items to prepare for what’s to come”.

Interesting, right? We can only imagine quite a few interesting Modern Warfare 3 characters are going to appear alongside Makarov. However, right now, we can’t say anything more specific than that. Call of Duty is keeping a lot of things under wraps – understandably so.

Modern Warfare 3 has the potential to be one of the best competitive FPS games out there when it drops, but only time will tell whether this return of the slide cancel movement technique is really what this shooter needs. A lot of Call of Duty fans are saying they want it, but we all know that wanting something and having it are two very different things. When it comes to COD, it’s going to be very hard to satisfy that nostalgia.

If you want to know everything we know about the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 campaign beyond this, you can find out more here. We know MW3 may finally see Call of Duty’s Captain Price drop into Fortnite, but it also may finally see Makarov take center stage as the series’ main antagonist – a villainous return we certainly can’t wait for.
