Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Greavard is a doggo you don’t want to pet

Greavard is the latest new Pokémon to be revealed for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and it is a Ghost-type that is both adorable and sinister at the same time

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Greavard: a small dog-like Pokemon with a candle on its head sticks out its tongue

Ahead of spooky season, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has unveiled yet another brand new Pokémon coming to the Paldea region: Greavard.

This Ghost-type good boi is the second adorable doggo to debut in the Paldea Pokédex, alongside the previously-announced Fidough. Despite looking like a fire hazard with its shaggy hair that comes down over its eyes, Greavard has a candle-like protrusion coming out of its head, with a lit flame on top to light its way. Unlike the other candle-inspired Ghost Pokémon we’ve had before (Litwick, Lampent, and Chandelure) Greavard does not have a dual Fire typing, and with the already announced version exclusive Ceruledge boasting a Fire/Ghost typing, it’s unlikely a potential evolution will gain this combination.

As shown off in the Ghost-themed reveal trailer, which also reminds players of the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet release date, Greavard can bury itself underground leaving just the point on its head exposed, making it look like a simple candle that’s been placed on the floor. This ability to dig and conceal itself could lead to a Ground dual typing further down its evolutionary line, but that’s merely speculation at this stage.

While Greavard is extremely playful, it comes with a literally soul-crushing downside. While it wants to be your friend and you’ll most likely want to be its friend too, a Greavard “will slowly and inadvertently absorb the life-force of those around it”, according to its page on the official Scarlet and Violet website.

Despite being a small pup, its large jaws can also apparently do some serious damage.

As well as this new Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, a few familiar Ghost-type friends make cameos in the first trailer for Greavard. As well as a Mimikyu, the trainer also encounters a Gengar.

Despite all these new Pokémon announcements, we’re still yet to see any more Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Paldean forms after the early reveal of Paldean Wooper.
