Here's when Mortal Kombat 1 added Quan Chi into the game from the Kombat Pack, alongside everything else you need to know about the iconic Kombatant.

If you’re a long-time Mortal Kombat fan, you’re probably very happy to see everyone’s favorite necromancer in Mortal Kombat 1. While Quan Chi featured in the game’s campaign at launch, it was only later down the line that he made is way into the playable roster.

Yes, alongside the likes of Homelander and Omni-Man, Quan Chi is one of the DLC fighters from the first Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack. His portal-poppin’ move set is incredibly diverse and (literally) adds a new dimension to one of the best fighting games out there. Here’s everything you need to know about the Mortal Kombat universe’s most powerful sorcerer in MK1.

Mortal Kombat 1 Quan Chi release date

Quan Chi was fully released as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1 on Thursday, December 21, 2023. Those with early access, however, could start brawling with him a week earlier on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

Given we had already seen plenty of Quan Chi, and his assets were already in the game due to his appearance in the campaign, it makes sense that he was one of the earliest Kombat Pack characters to join the roster. He was second in line, following in the footsteps of Omni-Man.

This is only Quan Chi’s second appearance in the mainline Mortal Kombat series as a playable character, despite the fact he debuted all the way back in 1997’s Mortal Kombat 4. He has been referenced or appeared in the narratives of other Mortal Kombat games, but MK1 ends a lengthy wait of over 25 years for fans to use him in battle again.

Mortal Kombat 1 Quan Chi trailer

Ahead of his introduction into the MK1 roster, NeatherRealm released a gameplay trailer for Quan Chi, showcasing his dynamic moves.

In it you see Quan Chi’s trademark portals, which let him easily navigate the realms of Mortal Kombat’s universe, being used in the majority of his attacks. This includes kicking opponents in the back by placing a portal behind them and getting some help from an interdimensional creature that slaps and grabs opponents with tentacles.

A great stun move that utilizes a cage made of bones can also lock enemies into place, and there are various skeleton or skull-themed moves that represent Quan Chi’s necromantic traits.

The end of the trailer also gives a sneak peek at the Kombat Pack fighter that would be released after Quan Chi, the John Cena-voiced Peacemaker. Speaking of voice actors…

Who is Quan Chi’s voice actor in Mortal Kombat 1?

In Mortal Kombat 1, Quan Chi is portrayed by Sean T. Krishnan. While Krishnan has mostly acted in TV series, he has leant his distinctive voice to other videogames such as Fallout 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengance.

How to unlock Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat 1

Like all of the DLC fighters in Mortal Kombat 1, the only way to permanently unlock Quan Chi as a playable character is by spending some cash.

If you already own the Kombat Pack, or the Premium Edition of Mortal Kombat 1, he will be sat waiting for you in your roster. If not, and you want to start using him, you’ll either have to buy the entire Kombat Pack, or buy Quan Chi as an individual add-on.

For most people, we would recommend spending a little extra to get the entire Kombat Pack. Not only do you get six playable characters (including Quan Chi, of course) and five Kameo fighters, but these days you can often find it with a sizeable discount that won’t make it that much more expensive then buying just the Quan Chi add-on, which retails at $7.99/ £6.49 on the Xbox and PlayStation stores. We’ve seen the Kombat Pack get as low as $15.99/ £13.99.

So there you have it, everything you need to know about Quan Chi’s addition into Mortal Kombat 1. If you want to learn more about some of the other characters in the Kombat Pack, we’ve got guides on the likes of Peacemaker and Homelander that you can take a look at too.
