Crossovers and classic fighters we want in the Mortal Kombat 1 roster

From classic Mortal Kombat characters, to Marvel villains, to PlayStation and Xbox icons, here are the characters we want to play as in Mortal Kombat 1.

Doom Slayer between Sub-Zero and Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 1 trailer

Such a brutal and dangerous world can lead to some great characters from known entertainment properties getting dismembered (or dismembering) in fantastic ways. Whether we get characters from past Mortal Kombat games returning, or iconic horror villains adding to their kill counts, having a variety of interesting fighters is one of the ways Mortal Kombat has always stayed on top as one of the best fighting games.

As we’re approaching the Mortal Kombat 1 release date, we already know a few of the Mortal Kombat 1 characters we are set to fight as or against when the latest game in the franchise arrives, and others have been rumored in leaks. But who else would we like to see on the main roster or as one of the MK1 Kameo fighters when the game finally drops later this year?

Ghostface in a field in Mortal Kombat 1 announcement trailer

Ghostface (Scream movies)

A few iconic horror villains have made their way into the Mortal Kombat tournament, including Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, and Jason Voorhees. But with a Scream 7 release date announcement looking likely, having Ghostface finally make his fighting game debut in Mortal Kombat 1 would be great.

He’d offer a faster approach than the horror baddies we’ve seen so far, making him much more versatile. And his more humorous approach to killing would certainly make for a great set of fatalities, as we’d love to see one that hearkens back to his iconic telephone calls.

Kratos from God of War series in field in Mortal Kombat 1 trailer

Kratos (God of War series)

Yes. I know, some of you are saying ‘well, Kratos was actually in Mortal Kombat 9 as a PlayStation version exclusive’, but hear me out. Since Kratos has become more defined as a character in the pseudo-reboot God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok, it would be a perfect time for him to return to the tournament.

Being armed with the Leviathan Axe, Draupnir Spear, and the Blades of Chaos would allow him to shine as a fairly unique fighter. We’d also love to see him on every version of Mortal Kombat 1, because platform-exclusive content sucks, but we know the odds of that happening are probably slim.

Doom Slayer standing in a field in Mortal Kombat 1 trailer

Doom Slayer (DOOM series)

To counter PlayStation mascot Kratos, it’s only right we throw an Xbox-owned IP into Mortal Kombat 1, but the more I think about it, Doom Slayer would be a perfect fit into the fighting game series. His silent intros would be perfect, and his arsenal of weapons (guns, the Crucible, and his raw unfiltered anger) would absolutely be a sight to behold in MK1.

I don’t think I need to add much more, other than RIP AND TEAR. But yes, Doom Slayer would be absolutely iconic in a Mortal Kombat game.

Noob Saibot standing in a field in Mortal Kombat 1 trailer

Noob Saibot (Mortal Kombat series)

Noob Saibot was available as a part of the main roster in Mortal Kombat 11, but we want him back as a character because we love his sinister design and his move set. The original Sub-Zero, also known by his human name Bi-Han, is a wraith that typically fills an antagonistic role within the narrative, and is a perfect villain for his younger brother who has taken the mantle of Sub-Zero.

Is he likely to make a return two games in a row? Probably not. But we can dream, and even though he may be a character with some cheesy combos, we still pick him every time.

Invincible standing in a field in Mortal Kombat 1 trailer

Invincible (Invincible show)

With the Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack leaks pointing to The Boys’ Homelander and Invincible’s Omni-Man making their fighting game debut, we think we’d actually prefer Mark Grayson, also known as Invincible, to appear instead of his father. The main reason is that Homelander and Omni-Man share very similar abilities, while Invincible’s personality and fighting style (even with similar powers to his father) would work well against Homelander’s more Super-Man approach.

Plus, I just prefer Invincible as a character over Omni-Man. Right now in the animated series, he is much more nuanced than his father, and with the Invincible season 2 release date around the corner, I’d much prefer the title character to take on the other Kombatants.

Thanos from Marvel in a field in Mortal Kombat 1 announcement trailer

Thanos (Marvel)

Yes, we know – this is very, very unlikely to happen, but picture this with me for a moment. Thanos has his full set of Infinity Stones and has full access to them in the Mortal Kombat universe. They would be toned down thanks to some multiverse shenanigans, but he can use lesser versions of them to defeat other Kombatants.

For example, he can teleport using the Space Stone, adjust the arena using the Reality Stone, use the Power Stone to increase his combo strength for a small amount of time, and more. He’d be easily the most difficult character to fit in the roster, due to the detail it would require, but it would be really exciting to see one of Marvel‘s most iconic villains in MK1.

Kenshi in a field in Mortal Kombat 1 trailer

Kenshi (Mortal Kombat series)

Kenshi is one of the most badass characters in the Mortal Kombat series, despite being a latecomer to the franchise. This blind swordsman has some incredible psychokinetic abilities, with a strong vengeance to kill the one and only Shang Tsung.

With this version of the Mortal Kombat universe hopefully taking a look at the long-running tournament in a new way, we imagine that Kenshi would be able to benefit from a change of origin, possibly with the ability to finally see again. He’d unlikely be able to see again for long though.

While there are plenty of characters we could add to this list, we would be here all day, so we’ll stop for now, but those are the Mortal Kombat 1 fighters we’d love to see in the game. Of course, you could even have some of these as Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo Fighters to make the new mechanic even more exciting, but we simply can’t wait to get our hands on the game during the Mortal Kombat 1 beta, even without the great fighters above.
