Spider-Man 2 drops biggest hint Harry Osborn is Venom yet

The biggest mystery of Insomniac Games' Spider-Man 2 is one step closer to being solved as The Game Awards' concert reinforces a key theory about Venom on PS5.

Spider-Man 2 Venom theory The Game Awards: an image of Peter Parker on a background showing a green healing tank

If you’re looking forward to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5, you’re probably sitting there wondering who’s under the mask when it comes to the infamous Venom – one of the main Spider-Man 2 villains Insomniac Games is throwing Peter and Miles up against. With creative director Bryan Intihar recently confirming that it isn’t going to be Peter Parker’s long-time rival Eddie Brock, it seems as though Peter Parker’s long-time best friend Harry Osborn is the likely candidate instead; this theory is suggested by the post-credits scene in 2018’s Spider-Man. Now, though, Insomniac Games has dropped the biggest hint that Harry Osborn is Venom in Spider-Man 2 yet – and it came during The Game Awards’ ten-year concert of all places.

During the aforementioned concert, which was organized by Geoff Keighley to celebrate ten whole years of The Game Awards, composer John Paesano debuted Greater Together – a track that is expected to be the main theme for Spider-Man 2. Throughout the composition, we hear a wonderful blend of both Peter Parker’s and Miles Morales’ Spider-Man themes from Insomniac’s previous titles. However, it also leads into something a little darker – a soundscape that we’re confident is Venom’s theme.

This particular section of Greater Together starts at around the 02:20 mark in the video below – however, we recommend you listed to the track in its’ entirety.

This section of the song is bleak, foreboding, and even contains some jarring strings that could be interpreted as screams and crying. It’s a fantastic piece of music and certainly captures the Venom’s essence.

What does this all have to do with our good pal Harry Osborn, though? Well, during The Game Awards’ concert, sections of Spider-Man’s post-credits scene – which involves Harry Osborn – were shown on-screen during this darker section of the song. Not only this, but images projected on the stage surround to accompany the video show tendrils of venomous symbiote spreading throughout this section.

Superhero game specialist and content creator ‘Evan Filarca’ has actually uploaded an entire recording of the live performance of Greater Together online; the concert itself was not livestreamed and, officially, only small sections of it have been uploaded online.

However, from the 04:10 mark in the video below, you can see the section we’re referring to. It doesn’t outright confirm Harry Osborn is going to be Venom in Spider-Man 2, but it does make it seem very likely.

While you’re here, if you want to watch the post-credits scene properly, you can below. In it, we see Norman Osborn visit his hidden laboratory – something Mary-Jane discovers part of during the story itself – to visit Harry Osborn in some sort of medical tank.

Watching this back, it does make it seem like Harry Osborn is going to be Venom. However, this is never confirmed – and still hasn’t been confirmed. The performance at The Game Awards’ concert, though, seems to reinforce the theory.

Of course, until we know more, it’s worth taking this all with a pinch of salt. However, Harry Osborn is set us as the most-likely candidate in Insomniac Games’ first Spider-Man game. There are, though, a few more plausible options when it comes to who could be Spider-Man 2’s Venom. We know foreshadowing should count for something, but Insomniac Games could be setting us up for a nice twist. Only time will tell, really, when it comes to that.

Either way, this is shaping up to be one of the best PS5 games we’re going to play this year. That Spider-Man 2 release date can’t come soon enough, right?
