Peter Parker’s strength isn’t just measured by his superpowers, but by his everlasting popularity too. Spider-Man 2 swung onto PS5 consoles last year, delivering another enthralling chapter for the wall crawler. Even better, developer Insomniac Games is now celebrating a landmark achievement for the PS5 exclusive, having reached over 10 million copies sold.
According to a recent social media post from the Ratchet & Clank developer, Insomniac expresses that it is “honored to celebrate an amazing milestone: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has surpassed 10 million units sold.” Not only is this huge for one of the best PS5 games around, but the additional sales are also exponential for the franchise overall. With these sales factored in, the studio also confirms that this brings “the [overall] game series sales to an astounding 50 million units.”
Spider-Man 2 came out of the gate with strong sales on launch, passing 2.5 million copies on launch day alone. It quickly went on to surpass new PS5 games at the time, such as Diablo 4, and even other entries in the series like Spider-Man Miles Morales. The confirmation comes alongside the latest Sony earnings report, which reveals that PS5 players won’t see any new games from major franchises like Spider-Man until March 2025 at the earliest (a surprise, and a disappointment, given how well Spider-Man 2 has sold).
While Sony is scaling back its focus in that area, the success of games like Spider-Man 2, and more recently Helldivers 2, is having lucrative effects on PlayStation’s monthly active users.
The report depicts a notable increase in the last financial year, confirming a rise from 102 million monthly users to 123 million. It is the highest number recorded yet for Sony during the era of the PlayStation 5, and could go even further with multiplayer games like Concord on the horizon. However, Spider-Man 2 still has a way to go if it is to beat PS5 exclusives like 2018’s God of War, which currently sits on 23 million units sold, according to the earnings report.
Spidey’s got some mileage to cover before he overthrows Kratos, but there are other games to cast your eyes upon, but not from Sony. Rumors continue to allege that major Xbox exclusives are heading to PS5, and two Xbox games in particular are lined up to make the leap.
