With Destiny 2 Season of the Deep submerging guardians into unknown regions, the surprise of extraction shooter Marathon is a clear highlight from the recent PlayStation Showcase. Adorned with a vibrant, pulpy aesthetic, the Marathon release date will be a hard one to wait for, especially if Bungie is already getting ready to crossover Marathon with the world of Destiny 2 across PS5, Xbox, and PC.
With Destiny 2 Season of the Deep conjuring up thrilling lore additions of its own, it may be worth pointing your gaze toward an old but intriguing theory from Redditor ‘eem5’ regarding the connection to political organization MIDA in both the original Marathon and Destiny 2. If you weren’t already aware, Marathon appeared in its first form as the 1994 first-person shooter released on Classic Mac iOS.
The Redditor posits that “the lore for the MIDA guns [in Destiny 2] is very suggestive that MIDA is not only a reference to Marathon, but may in fact be from the Marathon timeline.” Destiny 2 fans will have undoubtedly come across mentions of MIDA, with two weapons utilizing the namesake: the MIDA Multi-Tool and MIDA Mini-Tool. The Redditor shines a light on comments from several Destiny 2 characters, including that of Commander Zavala, that are contained in the lore tabs of the two MIDA weapons.
“Redjacks unlocked your MIDA weapon’s logs […] the rifle was designed by primitive AI and manufactured for use by a ‘revolutionary government’ named MIDA […] Guerilla war suits these versatile weapons. But Rahool insists his records never hinted at a rebel group named MIDA,” says Zavala in one of the lore entries.
With the reveal of the new Marathon, it appears that Bungie is keen to keep this link between the two universes going. The official Marathon Twitter account only follows two other accounts right now: Bungie’s official Twitter, and an account called ‘We_Are_MIDA’. Heading to that Twitter page gives way to a barrage of clues to work with, suggesting the connection between the games is more alive than ever before. One such post claims that players already have the tools available to uncover deeper secrets: “WE GAVE YOU THE TOOLS, YOU’VE COMPLETED THE CODE, BUT A CIPHER EVADES YOU. MAYBE IT’S TIME TO CLOCK OUT.”
These clues ended up being part of a short alternate reality game, which the community had to crack to unlock the Marathon Vidoc. This features several Bungie developers revealing more details about the game. You can watch that below.
If extraction shooters aren’t really up your alley, then the PlayStation Showcase offered plenty of other upcoming PS5 games and PSVR 2 titles to explore.
