Ember Lab’s soulful action-adventure game, Kena Bridge of Spirits, is finally shedding the mantle of PlayStation console exclusivity, spreading its wings and taking flight over to Xbox. The Kena Bridge of Spirits Xbox release date has officially been stenciled in for Thursday, August 15, almost three years after it arrived on Sony’s console.
According to a fresh press release, two versions of the game will be launched – a digital version on the Microsoft Store, and a physical Premium Edition that’s only available on Xbox Series X|S. Though it’s a shame to see one of 2021’s best games not get a physical distribution on Xbox One consoles, it’s unsurprising considering how far into the current console cycle we are. Both versions will set you back $39.99/£39.99 respectively.
In the accompanying 26-second teaser trailer for the former PS5 exclusive and new Xbox game, we can see Kena’s adorable Rot companions eagerly approaching a chest. Interestingly, the jewels inlaid on the wooden trove appear to be blue. Yet, as they activate, the gems begin to glow a brilliant green – an absolute coincidence, I’m sure.
As the chest opens, two new Xbox-exclusive pirate-themed Rot hats are revealed. On top of this, Ember Lab is offering up a unique Kena Staff, a retail-exclusive sticker sheet, and a digital copy of its official soundtrack. Unfortunately, only the physical Premium Edition of the game will include these extras – sorry, digital enjoyers.
Speaking on the port, Ember Lab COO Josh Grier says: “We’re thrilled to bring the story of Kena to a new audience on Xbox platforms. As our debut game, Kena means a great deal to everyone at the studio and the team is excited to share Kena’s journey with more players – we really hope everyone enjoys meeting Kena and her Rot friends!”
The arrival of Kena’s Xbox version was initially signaled by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) in April. Though it didn’t specify when exactly we’d see Kena and pals reach greener pastures, this announcement was always expected within a couple of months. I’m slightly surprised it hasn’t immediately been added to the list of Xbox Game Pass games – Xbox loves its day-one additions – but I’m sure it’ll probably join the service at some point down the road as it did with PS Plus.
