Team of the Year is the most prestigious promotion in FIFA Ultimate Team, and for the first time in the game mode’s history, a certain Portuguese chap will not be part of it. EA has just revealed the 100 FIFA 23 TOTY nominees, and there’s no Cristiano Ronaldo.
After the rockiest year of his illustrious career – which saw him produce only brief moments of Ronaldo magic, leave Manchester United after clashing with manager Erik ten Hag, and have a dismal World Cup with Portugal – there won’t be many that disagree with the decision not to have CR7 among the FIFA 23 TOTY nominees. That doesn’t take away from how shocking it is to realise there will be no blue Ronaldo when the FIFA 23 TOTY release date comes around.
Ronaldo has been included in every single Team of the Year promo since the Ultimate Team mode was fully introduced into the FIFA games in FIFA 11. With FIFA 23, that 12-game streak comes to an end.
Last year in FIFA 22, Ronaldo failed to make the starting XI for that game’s Team of the Year, but was brought in as the bonus 12th man after a fan vote.
With Ronaldo’s exemption, there is now only one player that, if voted in, could still continue the streak of being in every single FIFA Ultimate Team Team of the Year, and that’s of course Lionel Messi. And, if we’re being honest, the chances of Messi not being voted in are minute after the Argentina star finally won the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Other nominees that are bound to be popular picks for voting fans are Kylian Mbappe, Kevin De Bruyne, and Virgil van Dijk.
After enjoying incredible form in 2022, there are also opportunities for the likes of Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, and Vinicius Junior to get their first proper Team of the Year cards (not counting any Honourable Mentions cards).
