New Fallout 4 update lets the classic RPG do something Starfield can’t

The Fallout 4 next-gen update is set to bring more than just fresh visuals for the near-decade-old RPG on PS5 and Xbox.

The free Fallout 4 next-gen update release date has finally been announced, with developer Bethesda marking April 25 as the blessed day PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players will be able to experience the Commonwealth in the crispest quality, with framerates that’ll make any Starfield enjoyer jealous. Revamped visuals aren’t the only thing coming to the hit RPG, with a new quest on the horizon alongside plenty of Creation Club freebies – sheesh.

According to a fresh blog post from Bethesda, the update boasts “native applications for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Performance mode and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements and fixes.” With the promise of “up to 60 FPS” (sorry, Starfield console players, it’s not your time yet) and “increased resolutions,” it’s great to see one of the best RPG games getting a new lease of life, and we can only hope it measures up to CDPR’s next-gen update for The Witcher 3 (it slapped).

Meanwhile, back in the land of PS4 and Xbox One, Bethesda’s given the open-world game‘s paintwork a touch-up. Though there’s no more graphical juice to be squeezed out of the last-gen hardware, the studio has managed to include some “stability improvements, [as well as] login and quest fixes.”

Elsewhere in the article, Bethesda notes that The Enclave is making its way into the Fallout 4 storyline as part of a new quest called “Echoes of the Past.” During the fresh narrative beat you’ll have to prevent the remnants of the pre-war US Government and its dangerous ideology from taking root in the Commonwealth. Fortunately, Bethesda’s kitting you out appropriately for the mission ahead…

Alongside the quest, the studio’s dropping the following goodies:

  • Enclave Colonel uniform
  • Enclave Weapon Skins
  • Enclave Armor Skins
  • Tesla Cannon
  • Hellfire Power Armor
  • X-02 Power Armor
  • Heavy Incinerator

On top of all of this, Bethesda’s coughing up a Makeshift Weapon Pack, which weaponizes a “variety of unconventional objects” including a baseball launcher, a nail gun, and a piggy bank – make it rain… bullets. Though we’re a fair way off Halloween yet, spooky season is eternal. To celebrate at all times of the year, the Fallout 4 Halloween Workshop has whipped up 38 ghoulish decorations to give your settlement an extra splash of supernatural style.

It’s great to see that Bethesda has been prepared to capitalize on the buzz the Fallout Amazon series is making. This well-timed update to Fallout 4 is just the start, as there’s also a big push to get people into Fallout 76 by making it free for a limited time and adding some TV show-themed goodies too.
