Modern Warfare 3 sees 100,000 players on Xbox drop in before COD 2023

Ahead of COD 2023, aka Sledgehammer's Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty fans are going back to Infinity Ward's MW3 on Xbox as classic COD games gain new life.

Life really does come full circle, as we now await the Modern Warfare 3 release date. We don’t mean 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 of course, but instead the next entry into the recent Call of Duty reboot series, this time from Call of Duty Vanguard developer Sledgehammer Games. Yet, as players await what COD 2023 has in store, players are returning to the original MW3 on Xbox – arguably one of the best FPS games to hit the platform.

As many of the classic COD games return to life on Xbox Live, the Microsoft storefront is giving players the chance to buy games like World at War and Modern Warfare 3 on sale too. The third Modern Warfare game is quickly jumping up the charts, and this is reflected in the game’s playerbase too, as ‘CharlieINTEL‘ reports that over 100,000 players are already enjoying the Infinity Ward shooter again.

At the time of writing, the game sees approximately “126,000” players and counting back in MW3. Picking up the action directly after the ending of Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Modern Warfare 3 was notable for its evolution of the franchise’s multiplayer, while its production also saw Infinity Ward co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella leave to form Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment.

Within 24 hours of hitting shelves, Modern Warfare 3 quickly became the highest entertainment launch of all time, with over $400 million generated in revenue. This record would be surpassed by Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013, which brought in a staggering $1 billion in just three days.

Now, as we wait to see whether Call of Duty games end up on Xbox Game Pass, the future of the franchise looms in the distance. However, it is a future you might not be prepared for. Potential crossovers with Fortnite are allegedly in the works for MW3, bringing one of COD’s most beloved operators in the Epic Games battle royale.

Classic perks seen in the original Modern Warfare 2 are also rumored to return, and they’ll definitely prove to be a hit with players who prefer to strike with silence ferocity.

There might even be a new form of COD Zombies too, but we’ll just have to see what the Modern Warfare 3 reveal bring us. Until then, sit back and take a trip down memory lane with the first-ever trailer for 2011’s Modern Warfare 3. Simpler times.
