Though Modern Warfare 2 enjoys the arrival of Season 3 Reloaded, Activision is allegedly building momentum for the next Call of Duty iteration. Rumored to be a continuation of the reboot saga, Modern Warfare 3 could be the first game in the MW series to incorporate COD Zombies into its game mode roster. And it may just take influence from Zombies veterans Treyarch.
Following a report from Insider Gaming, it is claimed that the Modern Warfare 2 sequel will introduce a new COD Zombies experience that will act as a spiritual successor to Black Ops Cold War‘s Outbreak mode. The report alleges that “for Modern Warfare 3 zombies, several sources have said that the mode is essentially an Outbreak 2. It’s understood that Activision is currently weighing the possibilities on if the mode should be a part of the premium title or not.”
If the title isn’t to be part of the next iteration of the first-person shooter franchise, the recent set of rumors purports that this spin on Zombies could end up as a”free-to-play experience” down the line.
Outcries for a standalone COD Zombies game have been rampant for years, as the mode has seen various evolutions in the hands of different studios. Treyarch spawned the mode into existence with 2008’s excellent World at War before finding continued success in the subsequence trilogy of Black Ops titles after it. Rumors of a separate game began to emerge in February 2021, with leakers such as ‘RalphsValve‘ and Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson claiming that “there is a separate Call of Duty zombies project in early development, that is currently not connected to any title.”
The closest that the Modern Warfare franchise has come to in the way of COD Zombies is that of the Survival mode that appeared in 2011’s Modern Warfare 3. Pitting players into several arenas inspired by the game’s campaign, waves of AI soldiers would infiltrate the map, forcing the player to buy new weapons, killstreaks, and upgrades to stay alive.
Elsewhere, Sledgehammer Games have tried its hand at replicating Treyarch’s touch in Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare, and Call of Duty Vanguard, with Exo Zombies, a traditional version of the mode, and the highly maligned objective-based version that Vanguard concocted. It’d be a welcome addition to the Call of Duty franchise if it can capture the return-to-form antics that Black Ops Cold War managed to create. Maps like Die Maschine lovingly paid tribute to the mode’s origins, while Outbreak mode took the ambitious scope of Warzone and applied that addictive touch of Zombies carnage to it.
Whichever way the developer goes with the next era of Zombies, if it hits the right stride, we may have a new addition to the best FPS games you can play on PS5 and Xbox. In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about Modern Warfare 2 Season 3 Reloaded release date and making the most out of the current update.
