Modern Warfare 2 campaign hints at upcoming Warzone 2 DMZ mechanics

The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 campaign is finally here and it's brilliant - but, it's also hinting at some new mechanics coming to Warzone 2's DMZ mode

The Modern Warfare 2 early access period is here and it’s time to start working through that Modern Warfare 2 campaign mission list, right? Well, if you’re getting stuck into the story mode, you may have noticed a few interesting new mechanics peppered into the traditional Call of Duty gameplay experience – things like crafting, for example. While we can’t say for certain, Call of Duty content creator ‘JGOD‘ seems to think that these features are hinting at mechanics coming to Warzone 2’s DMZ mode – and we think he might be right.

While playing through a non-specific section of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign as John ‘Soap’ MacTavish, JGOD found himself tearing into some sort of portable electric fan – in-game, of course – to salvage a fan blade.

With Soap making such a remark in-game, Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley responds with a suggestion that Soap should “tie off the blade with a rope and pry open a door”. As per his suggestion, JGOD then opens an in-game menu – referring to it as a backpack – and and crafts a Pry Tool.

As you will be able to see for yourself if you watch the short gameplay clip here – or check out the screenshot of said gameplay clip below – it looks like there are six craftable items available in Modern Warfare 2, made up of eight ‘materials’ (like binding and metal).

When JGOD has crafted said Pry Tool, he uses it to – you guessed it – pry open a box. Inside are some explosives and an attachment for his weapon.

What makes this all quite interesting, outside the fact that it’s adding depth to the shooter’s campaign, is that JGOD suggests that “this is DMZ-type stuff”. There have been Modern Warfare 2 DMZ leaks that highlighted the Escape From Tarkov similarities, and we’re starting to finally see a little more evidence of that courtesty of the game’s campaign.

Despite all this, we’re still waiting for more concrete Modern Warfare 2 DMZ mode details – and we’ll hopefully get some of them soon when the Modern Warfare 2 Season 1 release date rolls around later in the year.
