12/09/2022 Reports have confirmed that only the NSO version of GoldenEye 007 will have online multiplayer – the Xbox version will be limited to local multiplayer at launch. The text has been edited to reflect this.

We know this feels a little like a fever dream, but it’s not – a 4K remake of 1997’s GoldenEye 007 is coming and it’s going to be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch (and Nintendo Switch Online) in the near future. During the latest Nintendo Direct, Rare announced that GoldenEye 007 will be simultaneously released on Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch, with both versions of the game available for free via the platform’s respective subscription services.

A remake of GoldenEye 007 is one FPS game that players have been asking about for a long time and it’s finally happening. This 1997 title is based on the 1995 007 adventure GoldenEye and features a thrilling campaign somewhat similar to the plot of the movie. However, it’s also a game that’s known for its incredible splitscreen deathmatch mode – arguably the reason why so many people have been asking for a remake.

In the GoldenEye 007 remake announcement, Rare explained that the Xbox version of the game will include achievements, 4K resolution, and smoother framerates than ever before.

In addition to this, it has confirmed the return of local split-screen local multiplayer. While there’s no mention of online multiplayer, we can’t imagine Rare would pass up on the chance to introduce this feature to this remade version of GoldenEye 007 – especially with it being on Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online. However, the official page from the 007 website suggests that online multiplayer is exclusive to the Switch version of the game – for some reason we don’t yet know.

From what we know, this version of GoldenEye 007 is going to be an updated port of the 2010 Eurocom port of the game – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It does however mean that, despite the 4K resolution promised, it’s probably not going to look as good as… say, the next Call of Duty, for example.

Still, with nostalgic four-player multiplayer coming, we can’t complain. This is easily going to be one of the best games on Xbox Game Pass when it launches – and maybe even one of the best Xbox Series X games out there period. We know that’s a stretch, but GoldenEye 007 really was ahead of its’ time.
