One of the most endearing yet chaotic upcoming games is the latest SpongeBob SquarePants game, The Cosmic Shake. This reality-splitting adventure under the sea not only serves up some new SpongeBob videogame action for the first time in a long while, but it will also apparently pay homage to the cartoon’s current status as one of the leading providers of memes.
There is an abundance of top-tier memes out there utilising our famous yellow friend, Patrick, Squidward, and other characters too, and developer Purple Lamp Studios says it’s going to lean into this as much as it can with plenty of references in The Cosmic Shake.
Speaking to The Loadout at Gamescom, game designer Daniela Etzinger says that Purple Lamp has tried to “incorporate as many memes as possible into the game”. We’ve also already seen via The Cosmic Shake’s announcement trailer that the game won’t be short of callbacks, with it mirroring the famous Sweet Victory performance scene from the cartoon.
Etzinger also alludes to how memes, alongside the actual cartoon series itself which is still being commissioned new seasons, have kept the characters and memories of SpongeBob in the public consciousness.
Sadly, we couldn’t extract any more The Cosmic Shake meme references from Purple Lamp, nor did we spot any in a brief presentation on the game on the Gamescom floor. However, with an enormous library of famous SpongeBob memes, the studio will be hardly short of source material.
From the confused Mr. Krabs, to ‘Ight Imma head out’, to left-out Squidward, the possibilities for some hilarious callbacks in The Cosmic Shake are plentiful. Hopefully we’ll get to see them for ourselves in the not too distant future and be blessed with news of a SpongeBob The Cosmic Shake release date, as more news arrives in the coming months.
