You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to picking the right weapon in Remnant 2 The Awakened King. Kicking off the game’s trio of major expansions, Gunfire Games takes players back to Losomn for another gothic and gory adventure. Ahead of the new Remnant 2 DLC, principal designer Ben Cureton reveals to The Loadout how every Remnant 2 weapon is created and which type you won’t see appear in the future.
“When we create a standard weapon, those that can share mods, we’re always looking for a foundation that doesn’t exist in the game,” Cureton explains regarding crafting the best Remnant 2 weapons. While he notes that “there are some guns that have slight similarities”, Cureton says that Gunfire Games will “never make another LMG. There’ll never be another LMG in the game, [not] unless it was like a special boss gun, but then it would do something wild anyway.”
The versatile nature of making Remnant 2 classes and experimenting with each Archetype puts Remnant 2 into the conversation of the best RPG games of 2023, and that notion is still at the forefront with The Awakened King: “We’re looking to provide you with something that just does not exist currently. It gets harder and harder when we’re talking about standard grounded guns, [for example] there’s only so many Revolver types in the world.”
Cureton tells us how “there are some semantics you can make. Oh, it’s a two-shot or a five-shot. It’s a 40, whatever. But generally speaking, we don’t want to do that. We want to say, ‘this gun doesn’t exist, and we found a unique way to add that in there.” The Awakened King and the game’s remaining two expansions won’t force any weapons into the game for the sake of it, as Cureton re-iterates that there needs to be a meaningful reason to hand the player this kind of power.
These weapons will manifest across The Awakened King DLC in a variety of scenarios, as Cureton emphasizes the importance of delivering scope to Losomn’s new coastal area. Showing off the waves crashing against the rocks below from a gorgeous castle area, Cureton explains that “this is all playable space that we are going around and there’s a lot of optional content, a lot of things to see. A lot of bad guys to get in your way. And of course, a lot of loot to pick up as well.”
While players can encounter the DLC at random by starting a new Adventure Mode campaign or playing the game for the first time with the DLC installed, it appears that The Awakened King is less about procedural generation. And the DLC’s new weapons, which are still under wraps, will be crucial for survival.
The Awakened King arrives on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. In the meantime, you dive into all the new PS5 games and new Xbox games that are fast approaching.
